Our Operating Room is a busy 9 suite department that performs a variety of surgical cases in the following specialty areas: Cardiothoracic, Vascular, Robotics, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Gynecology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Podiatry, and Plastics. We offer opportunities for continuous learning and professional growth related to the perioperative arena and are very proud of our structured and robust orientation program centered around the Periop 101 program through AORN.

The Surgical Technologist Educator works collaboratively with the RN Clinical Educator and Operating Room leadership team to develop, implement, and evaluate an evidence-based onboarding, orientation, and preceptor program for the Operating Room. To assist with planning and implementation of programs, identification, implementation, education of quality issues, and staff development within the Surgical Services department. To ensure quality patient care through standard setting, promotion and evaluation of nursing care in the clinical setting in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, Director, and RN Clinical Educator.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate management of, identify needs for, and implement educational programs for surgical assistants, technologists, and ancillary patient care personnel in the Operating Room setting.
  • Assess education needs of Surgical Services staff.
  • Work with department leadership to coordinate education specific to each unit.
  • Work collaboratively with RN Clinical Educator to:
    • Assess and document mandatory training/competencies as required for each role within the area.
    • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate monthly department meetings.
    • Conduct periodic surveys and audits.
    • Design, facilitate and coordinate educational programs for surgical service staff to meet identified needs.
    • Assist other patient care areas in the implementation of educational processes as appropriate.
    • Provide a variety of activities to promote learning using adult learning principles in teaching.
  • Meets regulatory standard for education and training of Surgical Services staff.
  • Is visible in surgery on a routine basis and available to provide direct patient care as needed.
  • Facilitates new program development and/or technology updates.
  • Assists surgery staff in acquiring clinical knowledge and skills using innovative approaches to guide professional practice.
  • Collaborates with RN Educator to provide ongoing orientation and training programs for Surgical Services staff.
  • Coordinates the scrub tech training program in collaboration with RN Educator and department leadership.
  • Works with nursing leadership, HR and other staff that assists in the orientation process to provide an effective orientation program.
  • Routinely meets with new team members.
  • Reviews current literature and initiates changes in clinical practice.
  • Develops competency checklists and assists to create standardization.
  • Works with RN Educator to coordinate student observation/clinical experience in the OR.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two to three years of prior clinical experience in the operating room setting.
  • Experience in/with teaching and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability for problem solving, decision-making and establishing effective rapport with personnel, patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Certified through a national certifying body for Surgical Technologist (National Certified Surgical Technician by NBSTSA or NCCT) or Surgical Assistants (The American Board of Surgical Assistants). Must maintain active certification or licensure throughout employment.
  • Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
  • Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Standard and Transmission Based Precautions.
  • Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities/hospitals.
  • Required to drive your own vehicle for business purposes.
