Traffic Signal Repairman

Department of Transportation

Division of Electrical Operations

Number of Positions: 7

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $10,764/month

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with I.B.E.W. - Local 9, Bargaining Unit 29 Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signal control devices and related electrical equipment in the field or in the shop as assigned, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES



  • Examines wiring diagrams, circuit blueprints, and controller timing-sequence charts to determine existing electrical configurations
  • Works in the field, installing new traffic signals and control cabinet equipment requiring electrical wiring of timing devices and control mechanism
  • Locates, identifies and clears defects in cables and wires using electrical measuring equipment (e.g., battery test circuit, amp meters)
  • Determines necessary repairs and prepares estimates for needed materials and equipment
  • Adjusts and replaces electronic signal timing devices, energized timing circuits and control mechanisms
  • Troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems to repair traffic control equipment on-site
  • Installs new parts to replace malfunctioning equipment (e.g., bulbs, fuses, relays)
  • Install temporary electrical traffic signal control devices to accommodate various construction projects
  • Modifies timing parameters and sequencing in electrical traffic signal control devices
  • Works in the shop, troubleshooting and repairing traffic signal control equipment and cabinet components brough in for repairs, overhauls and maintenance
  • Uses testing equipment to diagnose traffic signal control equipment malfunctions and overhauls and replaces mechanical parts and/or electronic components including controllers, conflict monitors and video components
  • Constructs traffic cabinets for installation in the field, wiring components, adding video components and programming traffic controllers. Uses test equipment to certify accuracy of control cabinet equipment.
  • Prepares work activity reports
  • Operates an aerial boom from a line truck/van to reach aerial wires or equipment, as required

Hours: 7AM-3PM, 3PM-11PM

*Hours of work and location may change and are assigned at department's discretion depending on the needs of the business.

Qualifications

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered lineman apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

* International Municipal Sign Association (IMSA) - Level Two Certification is required OR International Public Safety Institute (IPSI) - Level Two Certification is required at time of hire.

NOTE

* A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required

* Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required

* Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods of time

* Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs

* Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools

* Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment

* Ability to tolerate heights while working

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: This position requires candidates to pass a job knowledge exam. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been compiled and analyzed. Applicants who successfully apply for the position, meet the minimum qualifications, and possess the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be hired in seniority or lottery/random order
