I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences ( CCAS) is the intellectual and creative backbone of the university, a place where the arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences come together to form a nexus of ideas and opportunity. Political Science explores wide-ranging topics related to political behavior and governance, both in the United States and across the globe. Here on the campus of The George Washington University, the Political Science Department houses nationally recognized undergraduate and graduate programs with emphases in the subfields of American Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations.

This administrative position supports general department operations as well as a robust and prominent graduate program. Working under the Director of Graduate Studies and Academic Department Supervisor, the role includes facilitating graduate student application and funding package workflow, budget tracking, office supply management, and acting as a first point of contact for prospective graduate students. This support role also operates as a departmental liaison across the university in virtual and in-person formats, uses multiple software programs for financial and institutional website needs (Salesforce, Drupal), provides updates to department leadership, and similarly, coordinates the annual department newsletter.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • General Operations: Manages all logistical aspects of the Department of Political Science (with Academic Department Supervisor), including: reserving meeting spaces and catering, preparing program materials (annual department newsletter and updates to the department website), aiding in graduate student recruitment, arranging department speaker travel and reimbursements, and submitting facility housekeeping requests, among other general tasks.
  • Graduate Program Support: Works with the Director of Graduate Studies to record quantitative benchmarks of the graduate program while also providing graduate student support in areas of stipend/salary management, travel and administrative planning, and job placement support. Answers routine requests for information from current and prospective graduate students, including directing them to appropriate university sources. Organizes and monitors graduate student applications during the annual recruitment season for the review committee.
  • Financial Support: Processes graduate student funding package workflow and maintains a department P-card, while ensuring budget compliance with institutional policies and procedures. Additionally, orders supplies for the department, prepares reimbursement requests for visiting guests and student out-of-pocket expenses incurred from special events hosted with the department or from university scholarly travel.


This position performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is desired.
  • Experience working with Adobe Acrobat preferred.
  • Experience working with Financial software (Oracle), Personnel records management applications, (Banner, or DataMarts) would be ideal.


Hiring Range $21.27 - $27.63
