About the Role

We have an opportunity in Canon U.S.A., Inc., Digital Imaging Solutions Division located in Irvine, CA to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment to lead the research and development of computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies and their applications.Conducts research with the intent to develop new technologies. Scientists are developing professionals, acquiring the skills and experience necessary to become fully proficient in the field of research.

This position is full time and offers a hybrid work schedule requiring you to be in the office Monday and Wednesday and an option to work from home the remainder of the week (unless a specific business need arises requiring in office attendance on other days). Note that work schedules and office reporting requirements may change from time to time based on business needs.

Effective January 1, 2025, we will increase our required, scheduled in-office days for hybrid employees to three days a week.


Your Impact

- Initiates the design, development, execution and implementation of technology research projects
- Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Focus on creating and designing models for software solutions
- Plan and execute applied research
- Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories
- May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise management
- May participate in development of patent applications
- Interface with various departments and serves as internal consultant
- Carry out independent research and development software projects in one or more of the following areas:
- Computer Vision Applications: 3D computer vision, 3D computer graphics and modeling, 3D point cloud & mesh generation, Real-time vision applications, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Lighting condition analysis, Photogrammetry and/or optical reflectance models, Image and video analysis and understanding
- Machine learning including state of the art deep learning applications: Generative Adversarial Networks, Neural Radiance Field Models, Image time-series analysis, Object Detection, Semantic/ Instance Segmentation, Natural Language Processing (NLP)

- Keep current on latest trends and research in the above areas, Contribute to Canon's intellectual property portfolio, Work with existing team on investigations, software products, and software prototypes


About You: The Skills & Expertise You Bring

- Education Required: M.S. or Ph.D. in a related field such as Mathematics, Engineering, Sciences, etc.
- Experience Required: Minimum 5 years - experience in scientific research and development
- Experience working in the agriculture industry is desired
- Experience working in the VR & AR industry is desired
- Experience with software development for imaging devices is a plus
- Strong mathematical background and ability to apply it to new problems
- Working experience in C/C++ and/or Python
- Experience with libraries such as OpenCV, keras/tensorflow and/or pyTorch, Scikit-learn, OpenGL, SQL, Mlflow, Power BI, Docker, and CUDA is desired
- A proven track record of innovation
- The ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast moving, multi-cultural environment
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience working in an Agile environment is a plus

The company will not pursue or support visa sponsorship for this position.

In accordance with applicable law, we are providing the anticipated base salary range for this role: $104,870 - $157,050 annually
