The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Department of Pathology seeks a mid to senior level faculty member with at least five years of experience in academic practice to serve as Medical Director of Autopsy Pathology and Medical Director of Decedent Affairs at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. This individual will be a member of the Leadership Committee and will report directly to the Vice Chair of Anatomic Pathology on operational matters of the autopsy service. Key Responsibilities: Clinical
- Perform medical autopsies in academic setting, inclusive of training residents and other healthcare professionals
- Work with faculty attending physicians to create faculty autopsy service schedule with weeks of service to be determined by Department for each faculty in coordination with the Directors of Surgical Pathology.
- Serve as an effective communicator, fostering collegiality amongst faculty, staff, and trainees. Promote medical and scientific excellence in autopsy pathology and compliance in decedent affairs.
- Follow weekly reporting of autopsy turn around time, including timeliness of PAD and FAD reports. Notify any faculty and VC of AP of failure by faculty to meet expectations and regulatory requirements.
- As Medical Director of Decedent affairs, you will serve as an information conduit upwards to VC AP and Chair and to UCH Administration on important issues that may be a threat or challenge to personal security, IT breach, the department, service, decedent and next of kin. Examples of issues that may arise include workplace or personnel issues, equipment maintenance, upgrades and safety, practice protocols and policies required for CAP accredited medical autopsy programs, performance and productivity metric reviews and strategic planning.
- Facilitate CAP inspection process.
- Provide high level guidance on rare issues that cannot be handled by others to departmental leadership, supervisor of the Decedent Affairs Office, UCH administration, county coroners, hospital security, funeral home employees and others involved in decedent care and medical autopsy service.
Supervision of others
- Provide indirect supervision of medical autopsy practice involving faculty, staff, and graduate medical education trainees and the associated Decedent Affairs employees (indirectly through their Supervisor) of the Department of Pathology. In this role you will report up through the Vice Chair of Anatomic Pathology and Chair of the Department.
- Supervise the activities and scheduling of the hospital Decedent Affairs personnel, serve as Medical Director of University of Colorado Hospital Decedent Affairs services.
- Act as UCH Autopsy rotation director and provide resident orientation to the Autopsy service and complete aggregated evaluations for residents.
Compliance and regulatory
- Promote compliance, quality, and adherence to regulatory details of these services by working through Anatomic Pathology Manager, administrative and supervisory staff and faculty, Vice Chair of Anatomic Pathology, Chair of the Department of Pathology, and reporting officer of UCH.
- Establish and seek to meet standards of practice based on regulatory and compliance expectations (CAP, FDA, State of Colorado, County requirements, University and School policies).

Qualifications:
|
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Associate Professor or Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below: Associate Professor:
- MD or DO
- Completion of US Residency and subspecialty fellowship in Anatomic Pathology
- Board certification in Anatomic Pathology
- 5 years of experience in anatomic pathology and medical autopsy
Professor:
- MD or DO
- Completion of US Residency and subspecialty fellowship in Anatomic Pathology
- Board certification in Anatomic Pathology
- 10 years of experience in anatomic pathology and medical autopsy
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional subspecialty pathology training (ex. cardiovascular pathology, head and neck pathology) with board certification if applicable.

Anticipated Pay Range:
|
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE: Associate Professor: $250,000- 290,000 Professor $270,000-330,000 The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt. Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck.
