Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Laboratory Technician to join our Civil, Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) team. Under the direction of the Department Chair, the Laboratory Technician for the CAECM department will provide support and maintenance for CAECM laboratories in accordance with MSOE's established policies and procedures. The Laboratory Technician will support labs in several areas, oversee repairs and maintenance of equipment, order lab materials, and ensure compliance with EPA and OSHA requirements. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to successfully manage multiple projects and tasks, and the ability to interact with faculty, staff and students in an outwardly positive and professional manner are required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure CAECM faculty have all necessary equipment and supplies to operate laboratory courses
  • Follow department procedures to purchase new equipment and supplies when needed
  • Oversee maintenance, calibration, and repairs of all CAECM laboratory equipment
  • Keep laboratory and storage well organized and safe
  • Assist faculty in developing laboratory procedures for courses and research projects
  • Coordinate with faculty to ensure all CAECM laboratories are set-up properly to accommodate the needs of the department on a weekly basis
  • Maintain department laboratory management plans and other laboratory documents to ensure a safe environment
  • Train faculty and staff in laboratory safety and procedures
  • Ensure that all students are properly trained in laboratory safety and procedures for the courses they take and extracurricular activities that require CAECM laboratories
  • Maintain all necessary safety records to ensure compliance with EPA and OSHA regulations
  • Secure hazardous or specialized equipment for use only by approved individuals
  • Schedule, monitor, and coordinate activities in laboratory spaces outside of classroom activities
  • Work with facilities and custodial staff to ensure laboratory facilities are clean, well maintained, and safe


Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning laboratory budget
  • Calibrate, maintain and repair laboratory assets, including (but not limited to)
  • Ensuring safety equipment, such as the eye wash, shower, etc. is working properly
  • Maintain fire extinguishers and fire blankets
  • Maintain first aid equipment in all laboratories and other departmental spaces
  • Work with vendors on equipment updates, maintenance, certifications and calibrations
  • Manage large format electronic devices (e.g., iPlan Tables) that are under the control of the department
  • Maintain specialty equipment, such as the laser cutter and 3-D printing devices

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related field required
  • 1 year of relevant experience
  • Training in instrumental analysis and equipment maintenance
  • Familiarity with EPA/OSHA regulations and associated safety equipment
  • Interest in learning about new laboratory equipment related to the fields of architectural engineering, civil engineering, and construction management
  • Ability to become certified and use fork lifts and a bride crane
  • Experience using Microsoft 365 applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams)
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form
  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions


Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move and traverse laboratory areas
  • Employee must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs over short distances


Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional environment
  • This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets
  • This role uses laboratory equipment such as a crane, structural testing equipment, and digital equipment
  • Casual work attire is typically appropriate, and work-wear (jeans, work shirts, etc.) is often appropriate
  • The use of personal protective equipment, including prescription safety glasses (if necessary) is often expected
