Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) - Certified Nurse Midwife provides comprehensive health care for women from puberty through menopause in medical areas including prenatal, labor and delivery care, health care assessment, diagnosis and management for preventive health, normal gynecologic care, and minor medical problems as determined by scope of practice guidelines. Implement, interpret and manage laboratory, radiology or other diagnostic screenings and prescribe therapeutic agents, medications and devices. Educate patients on health status improvement and prevention techniques. Direct and manage members of the health care team in campus and off-campus clinical sites. Supervise and teach graduate students and resident physicians in clinical settings, lectures and skills assessment labs. Initiate or participate in research.

Duties & Responsibilities

CLINICAL
  • Perform physical exams, collect and document data, manage labor, and conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and laboratory studies.
  • Assess patients for admission and admit when required. Independently manage and deliver low risk women in labor who are greater or equal to 37 weeks.
  • Perform and record initial prenatal history and physical on patients in OB ER and labor and delivery (L&D).
  • Provide routine prenatal and intrapartum care and document admission, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum orders for low risk women.
  • Provide out-patient prenatal, gynecologic and women's health care services for low risk women.
  • Evaluation and examination of complicated patients in the high risk obstetric clinic, reproductive health clinic, OBER and labor and delivery and present to OB/GYN for management plan, and document orders/implementation.
  • Provide care according to the collaborative practice agreements at UI Health. Provide sexually-transmitted infection treatment to partners of patients.
  • Perform initial infant evaluation and initiate emergency measures when indicated. Interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe medications including controlled substances. Administer local anesthesia, perform routine deliveries and episiotomies.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members of the OB care team.
  • Provide 24 hour 7 days per week in-house coverage for the midwifery practice including back up call.
  • Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures including coordinating with other services and completion of necessary documentation, scheduling forms, insurance forms and clearance.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as the clinical practice evolves.

PROFESSIONAL
  • Integrate evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision-making. Participate in Departmental/hospital QI peer review and peer review processes.
  • Identify and participate in quality -improvement initiatives within the practice setting and initiating change as appropriate.
  • Obtain formal and/or independent learning activities to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills and knowledge. Participate in obstetrical, gynecological and midwifery research activities.

TEACHING/OUTREACH
  • Participate in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other healthcare staff, disciplines through supervising, teaching and mentoring.
  • Participate in lectures and skills laboratories, case conferences, and assist with curriculum development and instruction.
  • Responsible for assessment and performance evaluations of Advanced Practice nursing students, medical students and residents.
  • Participate in community activities to help educate patients, their families and community members.
  • Required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at the University of Illinois health System.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required.
  • Graduation from accredited APRN program.
  • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice
  • Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Midwife in the State of Illinois required.
