The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine and features an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center. Through collaborations with the O'Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.
Position Summary & Preferred qualifications/experience:
As part of the department finance team, this Grants & Contracts Specialist position will be supporting the Pre- and Post-Awards process by working with the Department's PIs in reviewing and submitting grant/contract applications, and coordinating efforts between the researchers, department leadership, and the institutional Sponsored Programs Office, as well as reviewing and managing existing and current awards, grants, and/or contracts. Specific job duties would include verifying grant/contract documents, assisting with the initial budget preparation, establishing new awards and/or transferring awards from other institutions, and performing the transition or handoff of awards to the post-awards team for further review and management. Ideal candidates would have previous experience in University Grants & Contracts work, preferably in an academic medical center or healthcare setting.
Candidates are encouraged to provide a cover letter detailing their past experience/skills and interest in the position. Candidates must possess and be able to demonstrate the following preferred qualifications/experience:
- Ability to navigate within eGrants and eResearch systems effectively
- Working knowledge of NIH grant programs and activity codes
- Have a working knowledge of IACUC, IRB, and COI
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Ability to interact with various communication styles
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a team environment to support multiple stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Excellent written communication is required in order to assist in the review of submissions and formatting of grant/award proposals to assure they are not rejected.

- CRA-certification is preferred

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
- Education
Bachelor's Degree in business administration, public administration, or related field.
- Experience
2 years of experience in business or public administration with emphasis on customer service in financial or contracting position.
Applicants without the stated degree, but with significant additional professional applicable experience may be considered in lieu of education requirement.
JOB DUTIES
- Provides funding opportunity information to potential applicants by reading newsletters and announcements, searching directories and funding files, identifying and matching sponsor with researcher, and mailing out information.
- Provides guidance to researchers for proposal development and submission by interpreting sponsor and university announcements and guidelines on application preparation and content by reviewing proposals for completeness and adherence to guidelines and mailing out proposals in timely manner.
- Provides grants management support to researchers by negotiating and processing awards, interpreting award conditions, obtaining approvals for award changes, and obtaining required reports.
- Drafts and negotiates contracts with various agencies (state and federal government, private organizations), pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology companies to achieve agreements satisfactory to all parties following state laws and Board of Regents' guidelines.
- Provides guidance and assistance to researchers as necessary for implementation and negotiation of research contracts, including sponsored research agreements and material transfer agreements.
- Monitors status of contracts for completion.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
