Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an Assistant Staff Member in the Technical Professional career ladder to perform research on clean energy solutions with a diverse team of scientists and engineers in the Manufacturing Sciences Division. The position is in the Chemical Process Scale Up Group; however, you will collaborate with staff across ORNL as well as other scientists from national labs and industry. You will be expected to execute research plans, build and design research equipment, and work together with a team to advance bioenergy and clean energy solutions. Attention to safety and effective communication are required.

Candidates with experience in research lab or industrial settings are encouraged to apply.The position will entail technical work in one or more of the following research areas: (1) thermochemical conversion of biomass and sustainable waste feedstocks, (2) catalytic upgrading of bioenergy intermediates for renewable fuels and chemicals, (3) point-source and direct air capture CO2 capture, (4) CO2 conversion to chemicals and fuels or utilization and sequestration in products, (5) research with advanced characterization techniques including neutrons, and (6) operation of research systems and platforms including complex multi-unit operation systems.Oak Ridge National Laboratory is located in beautiful East Tennessee with numerous outdoor recreation opportunities as well as lively dining and entertainment options in Oak Ridge, Knoxville, and surrounding cities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Complete technical tasks associated with research and development in line with standard procedures and under the supervision of other staff
  • Operate standard laboratory equipment and associated systems and software programs
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and procedures in line with safety policies
  • Collect, organize, and report data and findings to team members

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS / BA degree
  • Experience in a lab or industrial setting
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with safety protocols and a track record of attention to safety
  • Experience working in a team
