Job Description:

Summary:

The person in this position will be part of an innovative and collaborative geotechnical engineering team of over 90 geotechnical engineers and geologists. Barr's geotechnical engineering team serves the fuels, mining, power, manufacturing, and public sectors. We provide a wide array of services related to foundations, dams, embankments, landslides, soil-structure interaction, earth-retaining structures, excavations, and underground structures. We also offer geotechnical services for ground improvement, geotechnical modeling, instrumentation and monitoring, in-situ testing, geophysics, soil dynamics and earthquake engineering, geosynthetics, geohazard assessments, and groundwater and seepage.

The person in this position will work on a variety of geotechnical projects that involve traditional geotechnical and civil analysis and design related to shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, and earth retention with an emphasis on mine tailings storage facilities-largely earthen dams-and water retention dams.

Key responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Performing engineering investigation and design support tasks under the direction of more senior engineering professionals from conceptual phase through design

  • Performing geotechnical field investigations, assigning geotechnical laboratory tests, analyzing lab and field data, and supporting development of geotechnical reports

  • Preparing proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations and design work

  • Performing fieldwork such as investigation oversight, construction observation, instrumentation installation and monitoring, and field inspections

  • Providing support through training/mentorship of other geotechnical engineers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis

  • 2 years of related work experience

  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design disciplines

  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs

  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel for remote project sites on a recurring basis

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more

  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering

  • 4 years of geotechnical experience

  • Experience in the investigation, design, and construction of earthen dams

  • Experience with the installation and operation of geotechnical monitoring equipment

  • Experience working on mine sites with an emphasis on safety

  • Computer skills with geotechnical software programs, including Geostudio, LPile, APile, gINT, or FLAC
