Primary Purpose:

Lead and manage the department's data strategy and ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and organizational goals. Lead various cross divisional teams that will institute key wildfire mitigation strategies, initiatives and metrics that will develop SDG&E's Wildfire Mitigation Plan. Responsible to organize, track and develop assigned key initiatives that emanate from the Executive Wildfire Council and the Fire Directors Steering Team.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Leads key strategic projects and initiatives under the Wildfire Mitigation Plan. Develops cross divisional project teams that address initiatives and programs resulting from the Executive Wildfire Council and the Fire Directors Steering Team. Drives state-of-the-art programs to continue SDG&E's world class fire mitigation emphasis. Provides strategic input regarding the management of the Wildfire Mitigation Plan, its risks and its programs. Stays abreast on what other utilities are doing in the area of Wildfire and the risks thereof. Supports work that shapes the wildfire mitigation strategy by leveraging various stakeholders. Monitors progress, changes, and roadblocks to each assigned project, including executive level presentations. Reviews proposed legislation and provides clarification on impacts to the Wildfire Mitigation Plan and assists in the development and filing of further updates to the plan as needed.
  • Provides regular and detailed analysis of each project assigned to include timing, cost, issues, roadblocks and prepares regular summaries for presentation and review by executive leadership. Collaborates with other utilities to determine additional sources of potential programs designed to reduce risk for ignitions from the overhead electric system. Prepares and tracks metrics that examine risk and risk profiles and works to get them into the oversight of the projects assignments. Develops internal project management procedures for the department. Prepares and disseminates regular progress reports on the assigned projects detailing timing, cost data and extenuating issues related to each initiative. Support regulatory data requests, GRC activity, risk evaluations. Supports and maintains key performance metrics on each program and provides insights as to the reduction of risk experienced as a result of the programs put in place.
  • Participates in EOC activations as needed. Provides 24/7 on-call support on a rotating schedule due to EOC activations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).


Hybrid Schedule:



  • Fire Science & Climate Adaptation may operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week during in particular Red Flag events and requires the ability to work rotating shifts as well as weekends and holidays. This position will require significant support during non-business hours, especially during the typical southern California fire season.
  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.



Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, business, project management or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • 5 years related experience, such as project management, implementing strategic initiatives, program development, data and metrics, risk management, in a challenging environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-divisional teams and demonstrated ability to drive complex and sensitive projects forward to meet prescribed deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Must be able to manage time effectively, perform under pressure, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be proficient in the use of applications and tools (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, etc.).
  • Ability to review, analyze and recommend improvements to systems, processes and measures of performance required.
  • Ability to assess issues from multiple organizational and functional perspectives and discern an ideal proposal required.
  • Demonstrate solid interpersonal and communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of project management applications and their use desired.
  • Knowledge of the Wildfire Mitigation Plan as well as general wildfire sensitivity desired.
  • Understanding of the design and make-up of the electric system, and CPUC General Orders and legislative process is preferred.
  • Proficiency in data management skills, data integration, data warehouse as well as general understanding of GIS techniques desired.
  • Proficiency in cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is essential. Understanding cloud architecture, services, and best practices for cloud migration is preferred.
