The Department of Residential Education cooperates with the campus at large to create a community environment conducive to personal and professional growth. Residential Education staff are available to serve as peer educators, administrators, resource persons, and counselors. Professional maintenance staff provide facilities support and maintain rapport with students.
This Team is dedicated to creating a safe, supportive and welcoming community for both the high school and college student population. We advocate for the enrichment of student artists' experiences by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy social opportunities, identifying resources for success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing lifelong skills. We strive to prepare a residential environment that gives all students an opportunity to be innovative, creative, and reach their fullest potential. We commit to proactively and efficiently addressing students' housing needs by creating a safe and healthy living environment. The Residential Education program at University North Carolina School of the Arts houses approximately 750 high school and college aged students. |
Primary Description of Work |
The Director of Residential Education and Housing (Chief Housing Officer) plays a critical leadership role in creating and maintaining a vibrant residential experience for college students. The Director of Residential Education is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of residential education and housing for UNCSA's student community. The position requires a deep understanding of the unique needs of college students studying at a performing arts conservatory. The Director provides strategic leadership and oversight for all related aspects, including residential education programs, facilities management, budget development, staffing, and crisis intervention. This role reports to the Assistant Dean of Campus Life.
The Director works collaboratively with campus partners to enhance students' holistic learning development through their
UNCSA experience. The Director must also lead the development and implementation of programming for college students, coordinating these efforts with other Student Affairs programming. These programs are essential for student development, aiming to nurture successful individuals and artists. Given UNCSA's demanding arts and academic programs, the out-of-classroom experiences facilitated by Residential Education and Housing are designed to promote comprehensive student growth, addressing their educational, recreational, social, and personal development needs.
This role advocates for the enrichment of college and graduate student artists' experience by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy residential opportunities, identifying resources that foster student success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing skills essential to thriving lives as global citizens. Staffing is a major responsibility, involving the recruitment, training, evaluation, and supervision of a professional team of around twelve staff members and a student staff of up to twenty-one. The varying age range of students makes effective staffing crucial to the university's mission. |
Work Schedule and hours |
Monday-Friday 8am-5pm workday with flexible evenings and weekends with on-call responsibilities on a rotation basis. |
Description of Responsibilities and Duties |
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP:
- Oversee the development, maintenance, and enforcement of policies and procedures for Residential Education & Housing to ensure a safe, inclusive, and well-managed residential experience.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Campus Life to establish and communicate strategic long-range plans for housing and residential education.
- Lead research initiatives on emerging trends and innovative practices in housing operations; implement new procedures to enhance efficiency and support programmatic goals.
- Organize and facilitate staff meetings, professional development workshops, in-service sessions, and team retreats to foster skill-building and team cohesion.
- Design and implement assessment processes to evaluate program impact, measuring student engagement, learning outcomes, and overall program effectiveness to inform continuous improvement.
- Actively participate in leadership team meetings with the Vice Provost and Directors, contributing to strategic decision-making and cross-departmental alignment.
- Ensure seamless processing of student housing assignments for both the summer and regular academic terms, aligning with institutional goals and timelines.
- Direct the planning and execution of building opening and closing procedures, working closely with the team to ensure smooth transitions and effective communication.
- Cultivate strong relationships with key campus partners, including the Wellness Center, Campus Life, Student Assistance & Support, Financial Aid, Deans, and the Vice Provost's Office, ensuring holistic support for students.
- Develop and coordinate action plans to respond effectively to emergencies or temporary service interruptions within residence halls.
- Collaborate with the UNCSA Campus Police to maintain residence hall security and provide strategic input on campus-wide safety initiatives.
- Serve on various University/UNCSA Committees as appointed.
RESIDENTIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING AND TRAINING:
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive programming framework that supports students' educational, social, and recreational development, fostering a well-rounded residential experience.
- Lead the creation and implementation of leadership training initiatives for resident students, equipping them with essential skills for personal and community engagement.
- Contribute to the campus-wide orientation program, ensuring alignment and integration with residential services to support student transition and success.
- Provide individual support for students as needed, offering guidance and connecting them to additional campus resources when appropriate.
BUDGET:
- Administer the development and management of the housing budget.
- Supervise the Associate Director of Housing Operations who monitors the housing budget and communicates with the Assistant Dean of Campus Life and Associate Vice Provost for Budget and Fiscal Planning regarding housing related expenses.
- Maintain a close relationship with the Director of Purchasing to monitor the purchase of necessary supplies in the residence halls.
- Administer an on-going audit and evaluation of facilities management.
- Plan for renovations when appropriate in the residence hall areas.
- Review and prioritize renovation needs and schedule appropriate projects within budgetary limitations.
- Work with the Assistant Director of Occupancy Management and Area Coordinators in establishing damage prevention systems for the Artist Village and Center Stage Apartments.
SUPERVISION
- Lead the recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and evaluation of professional and paraprofessional staff to ensure a highly skilled and supportive team
- Oversee two Area Coordinators, the Assistant Director of Occupancy Management, and the Associate Director of Housing Operations, providing mentorship, guidance, and regular feedback.
- Demonstrate effective management and mentorship skills, including delegation, team building, and conflict resolution to promote a positive and productive work environment.
- Conduct regular reviews of staff job descriptions for accuracy and assist in staff reclassification processes as needed to reflect evolving roles.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Campus Life to develop performance metrics and determine merit-based salary adjustments for departmental staff.
- Ensure that personnel files are accurately maintained and up-to-date, adhering to university standards and confidentiality requirements.
- Coordinate orientation programs at the start of each term, supporting both professional and paraprofessional staff integration and preparation.
- Serve as a resource for first-line supervisors, offering guidance on handling internal disciplinary issues in alignment with departmental policies.
- Assess departmental staffing needs and work with Student Financial Aid to recruit and place work-study students effectively.
- Develop and implement training programs, along with efficient personnel and payroll procedures, to support smooth operations and staff compliance.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Represent the Department of Residential Education & Housing in official settings both on and off campus.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Master's degree or equivalent experience, with a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible management roles in housing and residential education.
- Proven leadership abilities, excellent human relations, and effective communication skills, particularly in Housing Facilities and Residence Life.

- Extensive experience in crisis and emergency management and response.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including proficiency in writing, public speaking, teaching, and responding to various stakeholders' needs.
- Knowledge of various assessment methodologies and the ability to apply data-driven outcomes for continual improvement.
- Strong track record of budget development and management.
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic plans that drive organizational growth and student success.

Safety and Health Compliance:
* Exceptional analytical skills to discern information relevant to the investigation and resolution of allegations of student misconduct
* Ability to respond to emergency situations with instinctive decision making
Communication:
* Candidate must present excellent communication skills, strong organization skills, and experience supervising/training professional staff
