Primary Description of Work
The Building Environmental Services Technician provides general housekeeping, cleaning, and janitorial services in University buildings to ensure safe and clean work environments for staff, students, faculty, and visitors.
Work Schedule and hours
Mon. - Fri., 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.; some weekend and/or holiday hours may be required.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Daily Building Assignments
- Daily vacuuming, dusting, mopping, disinfecting, replenishing paper and soap products, and window and glass cleaning.
- Emptying, cleaning, and/or disinfecting trash and/or recycling receptacles.
- Exterior rubbish removal.
- Keeps all janitor closets and storage areas neat and clean.
- Dust and wet mop hard surface floors daily and dust vertical and horizontal surfaces (furniture and chair rails, blinds, air vents, window sills, ledges, etc.).
- Operates and maintains basic equipment in the performance of maintaining hard surface floor housekeeping duties as needed including motor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, backpack vacuums, carpet extractors, buffers, waxing machines, and any specialty cleaning equipment. This includes transporting, set-up, and use of scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, etc. Proper clean-up and storage of the equipment will be expected at the conclusion of each floor care task.
- Carpeted floors are vacuumed daily and spot cleaned when needed.
- Clean elevator walls, thresholds, flat surfaces, and panels (where applicable).
- Wipe light switches, doorknobs, water fountains, push and kick plates.
- Maintain all BES equipment for safe operation. Report needed repairs to BES supervisor.

Bathrooms and Showers
- Sweep and mop floors daily and disinfect all surfaces.
- Disinfect all dispensers (vertical and horizontal surfaces and fixtures) and restock supplies.
- Clean mirrors and chrome surfaces daily and spot clean walls as needed.

Stairwells, Hallways and Elevators
- Monitor daily for unsafe conditions and cleanliness. Report safety issues to the BES supervisor.
- Clean stainless, vacuum and clean up spills and sweep as needed.
- Dust stairwell ledges and overheads and spot clean walls, handrails, and flat surfaces.

Safety
- Recognize and follow dispenser directions for properly mixing cleaning chemicals. Mixes and uses cleaning chemicals, supplies, and operating equipment in accordance with manufacturer's labels.
- Maintains equipment for safe and continuous use.
- Reports unsafe conditions and other safety issues to supervisor for follow-up.
- Wears proper personal protective equipment ( PPE) as required, such as gloves, goggles, aprons, and safety footwear.
- Ensures wet floor signs are out and visible when floor maintenance duties are being completed.
- Reports any on-the-job injury to the BES supervisor immediately.

Additional Responsibilities
- Perform general building condition assessments and report repair needs to Facilities Management work control center and/or direct supervisor. Examples include lights out, hot/cold areas, damaged finishes, leaks, etc.

Reports to the BES supervisor or designee immediately using the method designated by the BES supervisor (via text, phone call, or email, as specified), when tardy for duty shift or unable to be at work for the day. Completes requests for time off in accordance with current policy guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other higher authority within FMD.
Minimum Qualifications
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some of these positions.

If no applicants apply who meet the required competency level and training and experience requirements, then management may consider other applicants. Salary would be determined based on competencies, equity, budget, and market considerations.
Preferred Qualifications
At least six months of experience and knowledge of institutional cleaning procedures and the ability to follow instructions, work with minimal supervision, and perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some of these positions.
High School Diploma or GED.
Applicants with 2+ years of experience in a housekeeping or janitorial position will be given preference.
Terms of Employment S1 12 month
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the job duties. Some experience and knowledge of institutional cleaning procedures and the ability to follow instructions, work with minimal supervision, and perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must be able to climb stairs many times during the workday and carrying items while climbing stairs can be a daily task/requirement.

Knowledge-Professional: Reads work schedules and diagrams of buildings to arrive at the assigned work area on a timely basis. Performs basic cleaning such as but not limited to sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, etc., to keep working areas in a clean and orderly condition. Fills dispensers, such as tissue and soap dispensers, with the proper product and amount.

Customer Service: Listens and responds to customer needs promptly and respectfully.
