Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Department of English, located in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences ( CHSS) at Fayetteville State University, offers two undergraduate degrees and three graduate certificate programs, including a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature, a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature with a Teaching/Licensure concentration, and a graduate certificate in Professional Writing, Teaching of Writing and English as a Second Language. The department incorporates high-impact practices, such as service learning, internships in marketing and publishing, and a senior culminating experience. Building on the legacy of Charles W. Chesnutt, the first great African American novelist and former FSU leader, the program exposes students to diverse literatures along with cutting-edge trends such as digital humanities, preparing English majors for careers in education, law, business, communications, and the non-profit sector while contributing to liberal arts enrichment within the wider communities of Cumberland County, the state of North Carolina and beyond.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The Department Chair serves as the chief representative of the department, the leader of the department in its internal affairs, and the liaison between the departmental faculty and the university administration. The Chair is the administrative and instructional leader of the department. The duties of the Chair involve collaboration and interaction with faculty, staff, students, and other administrators.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
A doctoral degree in English and a record of excellence in teaching, research, and service are commensurate with the tenured associate professor/professor rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with administrative academic leadership, the acquisition of extramural funding, and the management of non-academic professional staff.
