Job Summary
The Director of Advising works in partnership with and as part of the Jonsson School Office of Undergraduate Affairs. The Director will serve as the Head Advisor for ECS. The Director will provide leadership for professional academic advising staff, oversee the administration and management of undergraduate academic advising, and collaborate with academic departments and programs across campus on issues of student success and ensure best practices are followed to support student success. The Director will work closely with the Director of Career Services and Professional Development and the Director of Success and Retention.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in counseling or a related field and 8 years experience working with college students in an academic counseling or advising capacity; or Master's degree & six years' experience as described above.
Preferred Education and Experience
Ph.D. Preferred; Excellent leadership, supervisory, planning, problem solving, organizational, project management skills. Ability to establish strategic goals and develop implementation plans to achieve results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead a large team of professional academic advisors.
  • Oversee the daily operations and services of the ECS advising office.
  • Serve on the committee for Undergraduate Advising Directors.
  • Serve on the Non-Academic Withdrawal Committee.
  • Serve on hiring committees as needed.
  • Hire, supervise, train, mentor, maintain schedules, and monitor caseloads of ECS Undergraduate Advising Staff.
  • Monitor undergraduate advising staff performance and performance reviews.
  • Maintain knowledge of and support university policies and procedures, academic requirements, and campus resources.
  • Maintain knowledge of and support all ECS Undergraduate degree programs.
  • Work effectively and collaborate with various campus offices, administrators, faculty and staff to provide training for ECS advising staff, such as HR and Student Services, and with the Registrar's Office and ECS Academic Departments
  • Advise new, transfer, and current students within ECS as needed.
  • Advise students seeking admission to UTD, including second baccalaureate and those seeking readmission.
  • Create and deliver presentations to collaborative groups of faculty, staff, students, and parents, e.g. Freshman and Transfer Orientation sessions as well as Preview Friday's and other recruitment events.
  • Establish strategic goals and develop implementation plans to achieve results.
  • Support and work with student services and academic success programs, such as those in the Living Learning Communities.
  • Support the development, implementation, and use of advising-related technology.
  • Analyze data and set direction for necessary changes.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and distribute advising-related reports.
  • Work effectively and collaborate with various campus offices, administrators, faculty and staff.
  • Attend recruitment events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Remote Notice - After the probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. May be required to use personal computer and other standard office equipment. Must be located within the DFW Area and have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.
