JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Comparative Medicine, in Hershey, PA, is seeking an Animal Caretaker.

Shift: Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm; Rotating holidays and weekends.

Provide general care, feeding and watering of research animals. RECORD and REPORT unusual instances involving behavior of animals, vermin infestation, temperature changes and other conditions affecting the wellbeing of the animals. PERFORM routine medication and nursing procedures under the direction of the supervisor. CLEAN and SANITIZE cages, animal rooms and related service areas. OPERATE rack, bottle, cage washing machine, autoclave, floor scrubber and washer, clothes washer and dryer. EUTHANIZE small laboratory animals as required. LOAD, UNLOAD and STORE food, cages and bedding materials, and other lab equipment and supplies. DELIVER orders being careful not to contaminate food sacks. OPERATE incinerator for the destruction of animals and bedding. RECEIVE animal deliveries, CHECK received animals against order regarding sex, weight, general health and identify by tattooing. MAINTAIN a daily census of all animals in the assigned facilities.

Job Requirements: Requires the use of commercial English, grammar and arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including decimals and fractions; simple use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, specifications, schedules, wiring diagrams, together with the use of adjustable measuring instruments, graduates and the like requiring interpretation in their various applications; or the posting, preparation, interpretation, use and checking of reports, forms, records and comparable data. Over 3 up to and including 6 months of effective experience.

This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The following clearances must be successfully completed for this position:

  • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check
