Overview

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Risk Engineer - Hydraulic Structures in Louisville, KY (reporting to our Davis, CA branch) with at least 15 years of experience to serve as a nationwide Structural Engineering resource and subject matter expert. This individual will provide technical expertise and collaborate with our existing network of dam and levee engineering professionals to help grow our national Dams, Levees, and Hydraulic Structures Engineering practice and contribute to innovative and challenging projects involving heavy-civil works and hydraulic structures such as concrete dams, spillways, outlet works, conveyance systems, river navigation locks, flood walls, and powerhouses. This individual will have a thorough understanding of risk-informed decision-making frameworks that shape many of our clients' dam and levee safety programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Collaboration and mentoring are cornerstones of Geosyntec's culture. We operate under a sell-manage-do culture, and so we expect that you'd work on challenging technical projects while leveraging your existing knowledge and experience to help Geosyntec expand its current practices and capabilities through a collaborative team approach to business and practice development, and project execution. You may also be asked to take on project management responsibilities, along with staff development, and mentoring tasks. Some of the key responsibilities for the position include:

    Provide leadership within the Geosyntec Dams and Hydraulic Structures practice to develop and implement current structural engineering best practices in risk analysis and engineering design within the firm.
  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and oversight for Dams and Hydraulic Structures projects including such activities as:
    • Dam/levee safety inspections and engineering evaluations of concrete dams and their appurtenances and structural aspects of embankment dams, levees, and other water management structures;
    • Serving as a Structural Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) on risk analysis teams for varying levels of risk assessments (i.e. screening-level, SQRA, QRA) and performing potential failure mode analysis and other supporting risk evaluations;
    • Performing independent external reviews and serving as a Senior Structural Engineer on review boards for design, risk analysis, constructability, and value engineering reviews;
    • Overseeing technical stability analyses and other structural calculations for hydraulic structures in accordance with Federal standards such as USACE, Reclamation, and FERC;
    • Analysis, design, and detailing of: rehabilitation schemes for dams and appurtenances, foundations and anchoring systems, reinforced concrete structures, roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dams, chute spillway structures, energy dissipation structures, aprons, channels, and floodwalls.
    • Instrumentation of dams and ancillary structures
    • Structural evaluation and/or design of spillway gates, including seismic evaluations;
    • Dynamic structural analysis of dam-related structures (e.g., intake towers, surge tanks, spillway piers, etc.);
    • Preparing specifications and concrete mix design for conventional concrete, RCC, and self-consolidating concrete (SCC) structures;
    • Preparing technical documents including reports, calculation packages, construction drawings and specifications;
    • Design services during construction.
  • Serve as a mentor for technical staff and assist with staff development and recruiting to grow the firm's structural capabilities.
  • Participate in business development activities such as contributing to business plans, meetings with and presentations to clients, proposal preparation, and participation in professional organizations and activities.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (Structural). (required)
  • Advanced degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. (preferred)
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the U.S. (required)
  • NCEES Record for PE comity. (preferred)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in the dams and levees industry, or equivalent combination of advanced education and experience. (required)
  • Knowledge of Risk-Informed-Decision-Making methodologies such as USACE, FERC, and Reclamation. (required)
  • Knowledge of relevant structural engineering design and detailing software (required)
  • Knowledge of CAD/VDC/BIM software. (preferred)
  • Knowledge of general numerical modeling tools. (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
