The Acute Care Surgery Service (ACS) has an exciting opportunity for an Advance Care Practitioner (ACP, ie NP or PA). CRMH is a 737-bed full-service tertiary/quaternary care academic health center. CRMH has been certified as the region's only Level 1 trauma center. CRMH has the busiest Emergency Department in the state of Virginia due to its large catchment area. ACS is the umbrella surgery service covering three divisions: Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. The ACS ACP leadership structure is made up of ACPs and is focused on optimizing and supporting the performance of the ACP group to improve productivity, job satisfaction, talent utilization and maximization of scope of practice. The fellowship trains primarily within this ACP group to get a new graduate the best opportunity for learning on a fast paced service line. More information at https://www.carilionclinic.org/fellowships/np_pa#programs Emergency General Surgery is the branch that commonly treats necrotizing soft tissue infections, abscesses, acute abdominal conditions including but not limited to incarcerated and strangulated hernias, appendicitis, gall bladder and bile duct disease, intestinal perforation, intestinal obstruction, intestinal ischemia, and internal bleeding. Trauma Surgery is a branch that treats all manners of trauma from consults in the emergency department to alert activations in the trauma bays. Ages 15+ can be seen and admitted to our service for inpatient and outpatient care. Surgical Critical Care is the section who treats the ICU patients on many of the surgical specialties, including but not limited to neurosurgery, trauma and general surgery. The ACP fellow will be trained to perform the following: history and physical; order and interpret tests; make preliminary diagnosis; treat injuries/illness; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patient and/or prescribe medication. The ACP fellow works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including Attending Physicians, Residents, other ACPs, medical and ACP students, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Pharmacists, Case Managers, Social workers, Consultants and more. The team's goal is to deliver high quality, best practice, timely, cost-effective care. The ACP fellow will provide care from the initial consult, throughout the hospital stay in the ICU/PCU/Floor, to disposition, and perform outpatient follow-up in the clinic. The ACP fellow is exceptional at maintaining a patient-family centered focus throughout the hospital course and are vital in the management of complex social situations and planning for a safe and successful hospital discharge and ensuring proper follow-up to minimize need for readmissions.
