JOB TITLE:

Laboratory Technician II - Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory

JOB PURPOSE:

Assist in managing the daily operations of the regulatory serology laboratory; perform time sensitive diagnostic testing required for movement of animals within and across the state of Wyoming, analyze and interpret data; communicate with veterinary clients, the state veterinarian, and the USDA animal health officials through phone calls and emails; train and supervise undergraduate students. Supervise the operations of a designated laboratory; perform advanced diagnostic/research tests and services with complex analysis and interpretation of data; train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage and direct the daily operations of the regulatory serology laboratory section.
  • Perform diagnostic testing on serum samples
  • Communicate results of diagnostic testing with veterinary clients.
  • Analyze and interpret results of data
  • Compile monthly and quarterly reports for testing performed for certain diseases
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot the repair of research instruments/equipment.
  • Discuss issues of concern with clients and animal health officials
  • Develop and maintain quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of results
  • Maintain records, complete laboratory forms, and final reports for services performed.
  • Maintain inventory and purchase laboratory supplies
  • Perform and pass proficiency testing as part of ongoing laboratory accreditation

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Complete lab forms and reports, bill clients for services performed, and assist in maintaining records and statistics.
  • Maintain inventory and purchase laboratory supplies.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: 1-year work-related experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Background in Veterinary or Animal Science
  • Diagnostic laboratory techniques including serological assays (ELISA, FPA, BAPA)
  • Experience using micropipettes for dispensing liquids
  • Experience using specialized scientific instruments that are controlled by computer software
  • Experience using spreadsheet software for data analysis
  • Experience working as part of a collaborative team
  • Professional Communication skills for client and animal health official interactions
  • Flexibility in scheduling for high volume sample days
