Position Highlights

The Department of Engineering seeks an Accountant I to provide support to Engineering Business Services - OEBC. This position reports to the Director, Finance and Administration, and will help to support four academic units: Academic Affairs, Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Systems and Industrial Engineering.

The successful candidate in this position will be responsible for performing a variety of accounting assignments, such as reviewing/creating purchase orders, expense/travel reimbursements, reconciling purchasing card purchases, and other related financial management transactions. The candidate will also be responsible for preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for all departmental account (Non-Sponsored Projects).

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed accounting assignments requiring a basic knowledge of accounting theory and principles. Work is subject to general review by senior accounting personnel.
  • Provide specialized or general analysis support in various accounting functions such as A/R, A/P, Payroll, Cost accounting, etc.
  • Perform monthly reconciliation and management of accounts consisting of designated, gift, foundation, state, and other funding sources, ensuring compliance with external sponsors, University of Arizona (UA), University of Arizona Foundation (UAF), and governmental policies and regulations.
  • Utilize UAccess systems to review and monitor account transactions, account budgets, employee payroll and distributions, balances, and account reconciliations, and provide explanations and recommendations for budget variances.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for all departmental accounts (Non-Sponsored Projects), cost projections, and financial analysis.
  • Interpret data and point out trends or deviations from standards.
  • Prepare special reports/projects as requested.
  • Initiate transactions in UAccess Financials such as General Error Corrections (GEC), Distribution of Income and Expense (DI), Salary Expense Transfers (SET), and Transfer of Funds (TF) to move expenses to appropriate account, object code, or fund accounts.
  • Review and/or prepare business office documents including Purchase Orders, Reimbursements, PCard (Purchasing Card) purchases, Internal Billings, edits to Assets, and maintain department Capital Asset Inventory.
  • Serve as PCard liaison and reconciler for the department. Assist with addressing queries from the Financial Services Office - Compliance regarding PCard transactions.
  • Provide training to department users as required.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field of study.
  • Prior experience in a university setting.
  • Two or more years of experience working with accounting principles.
  • Experience with UA systems such as UAccess Financials and Analytics.
  • Experience with UA Purchasing Card and Procurement policies and procedures.
