This Research Administrator will be supporting Dr. John Manis within the Dept. of Lab Medicine and Transfusion Medicine. The Manis lab focuses on the development of the immune system. One area of work focuses on the basic mechanisms that control programmed DNA breaks in B cells of the immune system. Errors in the repair of programmed immune system breaks lead to immunodeficiency and can lead to cancers including lymphoma. The laboratory has expertise in generating gene-targeted mouse embryonic stem cells and mice to study immune system defects. Another area of focus is in developing mouse models for human primary immunodeficiency syndromes. Presently, a mouse model of Job's Syndrome, replicating autosomal-dominant Hyper IgE syndrome due to defective Stat 3 is being examined to understand lineage specific contributions to the disease.

This Research Administrator will be responsible for:

  • Preparing grant applications, coordinating institutional reviews and approvals, and works with Principal Investigators to ensure timely submission of funding proposals
  • Ensuring timely renewal of grants and subcontracts and/or orderly closeout of completed sponsored activities, including the submission of annual progress reports
  • Performing pre-award and post-award functions such as allocation of research labor costs across funding sources consistent with level of research effort and approve purchase requisitions
  • Coordinating departmental research effort reporting and ensuring timely submission of certified effort reports in compliance with sponsor and institutional guidelines
  • Using institutional resources to maintain department records of grant awards and agreements
  • May help research staff identify sources of funding by maintaining knowledge of agency programs and disseminating information to staff
  • Working with appropriate institutional central offices (Research Administration, Research Finance, Accounts Payable, etc.) to submit sponsor reports, troubleshoot and resolve matters
  • Working with investigators to develop annual research/clinical trial budget; reconciling monthly expenses to budget; forecasts over/under expenditures and provides monthly status reports to the Principal Investigators

To qualify, you must have:

  • A Bachelor's degree is required
  • A minimum of 1 year of research administration or financial experience is required
  • Previous experience with grant writing, the grant submission process or IRB submissions is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of federal cost allocation principles in order to ensure the proper stewardship of sponsored funds is preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in order to effectively resolve issues and mediate fair solutions
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and database applications
  • The ability to independently seek out answers from the appropriate federal compliance and regulatory resource(s), grant publication, and/or the hospital technical expert(s)
