The Position

2025 Summer Intern - Mass Spectrometry in the Department of BioAnalytical Sciences

Department Summary

Our BioAnalytical Sciences Department is a world-class bioanalytical center of excellence for novel strategies, technologies, and methods that enable the development of life-changing medicines. We do this by fostering an innovative and collaborative environment that values and recognizes diversity of contributions.

We are seeking a highly-motivated intern to join our team for the summer of 2025. The successful candidate for this laboratory-based position will work closely with our scientific team to develop and explore methodologies to investigate biotransformation using mass spectrometry (MS) to inform and improve bioanalytical strategies in drug development. The project will utilize a range of automation technologies to streamline sample preparation paired with the latest techniques in MS.

The ideal candidate will have strong general laboratory skills, and a general understanding of liquid chromatography (LC), tandem MS and proteomics methods.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • The intern will focus on developing LC-MS based methods for assessing biotransformation of biotherapeutic proteins from biological matrices including in vivo samples, by both the targeted and non-targeted analysis of protein analytes.

  • The intern will be trained to use both discovery HRMS workflows as well as targeted workflows on Orbitrap and Triple Quadrupole MS instruments, respectively.

  • The intern will learn and perform sample preparation techniques for LC-MS analysis including bottom-up proteomics and affinity capture (immunoprecipitation) using automated sample handling robotics.

  • The intern will assess assay performance by conducting LC-MS analysis and evaluating data using data processing software.

  • Communication of research results will be in periodic written and oral presentations.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2025.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Project mentorship from Genentech researchers and exposure to state-of-the-art bioanalytical research and development facility in our South San Francisco, CA, laboratories.

  • Final presentations of project work to senior leaders and organization-wide intern poster session.

  • Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.

  • Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
