POSITION PURPOSE

Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE) is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Substation Wireman to support our Substations department. As a Substation Wireman, you will ensure that MGE's electrical systems operate safely and efficiently as they play a key role in maintaining the infrastructure that supports power distribution.

WORK SCHEDULE



  • The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Employees are expected to be reasonably available for overtime work and callouts.

    • Residency expectation is to be able to respond to calls within 45 minutes.




SALARY



  • The starting pay for this position is $41.81 per hour.
  • Candidates with relevant experience may be considered at a higher level. Salary is commensurate with grade level and related work experience.
  • This position is part of a state-indentured (five-year) apprenticeship.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Installation, Commissioning, and Troubleshooting

    • Installs and connects high-voltage and low-voltage electrical wiring, transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and other equipment in substations.
    • Works with various types of electrical conductors, cables, and bus bars to complete installations.


  • Maintenance and Repairs

    • Performs routine maintenance on electrical equipment, including testing and inspecting wiring systems and components for wear or damage.


  • Testing and Inspections

    • Uses specialized equipment to test the functionality and safety of electrical systems in substations.
    • Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety standards, and company procedures.
    • Calibrates instruments and checks operational efficiency of electrical systems and devices.




QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience



  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a technical or vocational program in electronics, electrical engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license.


Knowledge and Skills



  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration.
  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs.
    • Comfortable working in outdoor environments, including potentially extreme weather conditions.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and near high-voltage equipment.

JOB LOCATION

The position will report to a central downtown location and primarily work in the field throughout MGE's gas and electric service territory in Dane County, both outdoors and indoors. MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life. We offer free, on-site parking and are located near biking trails and bus stops. Many employees enjoy the use of our many on-site EV charging stations.
