Responsible for the treatment of patients with sensory or motor deficits which mobility or functional performance of gross motor activities. Performs the initial evaluation of the patient amp; provides follow up treatment amp; feedback to the staff therapist to effectively plan for discharge. Serves as a member of the Rehabilitation Dept amp; is an integral component of the interdisciplinary medical team that strives to return the patient to his/her highest level of functional independence. Treats all patients on assigned rotations, in addition to providing cross coverage of the department's other rotations and the Rehabilitation Division's other locations/sites, as need dictates. This position works under the direct supervision of the team leader. Position located at University Hospitals.

Minimum Education Required
2-Year College Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications
Completion of approved education curriculum as a physical therapy assistant State of Ohio licensure.

The staff physical therapy assistant is responsible for treatment of sensory or motor deficits that impair the patients mobility or functional performance of gross motor activities. The staff PT performs the initial evaluation of the assigned patient and the LPTA is a member of the Rehabilitation Department and is an integral component of the interdisciplinary medical team that strives to return the patient to his/her highest level of functional independence.

Position Summary The staff physical therapy assistant treats all patients of assigned rotations, in addition to providing cross coverage of the departments other rotations and the Rehabilitation Divisions other locations/sites as need dictates. This position works under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities Possesses general background knowledge of disease processes and effects of mobility/strength/endurance. Must also possess knowledge and skills in the treatment of specific surgical and medical diagnoses.

  • Follows treatment plan for patients per physical prescription and physical therapists directives. Possesses knowledge base for treatment techniques/procedures appropriate to the disorder and the patients developmental and/or chronological age.
  • Provides physical therapist with feedback regarding effectiveness of treatments provided on a regular basis, providing written documentation and justification for continued services. Possesses ability to provide feedback to therapist regarding revision of functional goals within reasonable time frames for goal attainment and within the original treatment plan.
  • Provides effective patient and family education.
  • Provides effective verbal and written communication to ensure team approach to rehabilitation. Communicates when appropriate with other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Completes all required documentation per departmental policy and procedures.
  • Provides effective and appropriate discharge planning in conjunction with the physical therapist. Effectively utilizes skills of other team members.
  • Participates in clinical education, serving as a clinical instructor to senior level physical therapy assistant students.
  • Provides appropriate inservices to staff, other interdisciplinary staff and community in support of improving clinical competencies of other team members and promoting health awareness in the community.
  • Demonstrates professional growth by participating in regular continuing education opportunities.
  • Attends weekly staff meeting.
  • Completes special projects-as assigned.
  • Serves on assigned departmental and medical center committees.
  • Participates in departmental performance management efforts.

Practices within the Medical Centers policies and procedures. Adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals. Maintains infection control standards and implements appropriate patient safety.

Patient Populations Served:

This position will serve our general medicine, geriatric, abdominal organ transplant, cardiovascular and pulmonary progressive care, and medical intensive care populations.
