About the College/Unit/Department |
The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery comprises approximately 50 faculty members, 51 clinical residents, ten rotating interns, seven specialty interns, and three administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and there are six dedicated research technicians who assist in the research missions of the Department's faculty. Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, emergency/critical care, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, radiology, dermatology, and a community practice program (
UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the Department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The Department has a strong teaching, research, and clinical service track record.
The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a state-of-the-art tertiary referral
center and is well equipped with dedicated avian, herpetological, small mammal, and wildlife hospitalization facilities; digital radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasonography, 128 slice CT, nuclear scintigraphy, 3T and 7T
MRI; chemotherapy and linear accelerator; flexible and rigid diagnostic and surgical endoscopy; microsurgery, radiosurgery, Nd-
YAG, diode and CO2 lasers; large pharmacy staffed by qualified pharmacists; and access to all major veterinary specialties. In addition, there is a fully accredited clinical pathology lab on site and a state licensed diagnostic lab on campus. Daytime and after-hours emergencies are seen by the emergency service, with support from the zoological medicine resident and faculty, and transferred to the zoological medicine service the following morning. The zoological medicine service is integrated into the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and enjoys a collegial working relationship with all major specialties. A video tour of the hospital and zoological medicine service is available (

The University of Georgia, the nation's first chartered state-supported university, is a research-intensive land grant and sea grant university situated in the vibrant college town of Athens. Only an hour from Atlanta, Athens is a progressive university town with a rich history, and is centered among beautiful surrounding landscapes. The area abounds in local music, art, literature, and theatre, and hosts many performances by national and international touring artists.
