Overview

Work with breast feeding mother and baby couplets to facilitate the initiation of breast feeding and offer ongoing support and education to facilitate continued breast feeding after discharge.


Qualifications

License/Certifications:
Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS) - Lactation Education Consultants (LEC); International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) within 5 years - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE); Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR); International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE); Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) - Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP)

Education:
Bachelor's Degree: Nursing

Responsibilities


  • Provides education for patients, staff and physicians
  • Orients new nursing employees
  • Participates in unit councils
  • Provides parent education- 1:1 and group settings
  • Represents UnityPoint Health at community events
  • Shares clinical knowledge through informal teaching and in response to the learning needs of others
  • Demonstrates technical knowledge of equipment and troubleshoots when problems arise
  • Adapts teaching strategies based on patient's response, readiness to learn and level of comprehension
  • Takes cultural, age-specific, gender, and developmental factors into consideration when teaching patients about procedures, illness, hospital experience, etc.


  • Develops a comprehensive breast-feeding plan
  • Assesses patient's status through interview, observation and physical assessment of actual problems and outcomes
  • Provides a thorough ongoing assessment of breast-feeding activities
  • Provides education regarding alternative feeding methods
  • Initiates milk production
  • Uses appropriate interventions identified in the plan of care to achieve expected patient outcomes
  • Ensures infant safety when breast feeding is not effective
  • Identifies patients in need of follow up after discharge
  • Completes care plan and discharge plan in a timely manner


  • Documentation is thorough, accurate and timely.
  • All patient interactions are documented in a concise format in the EMR
  • Able to schedule outpatient appointments in EMR
  • Enters patient charges accurately and timely
  • Identifies practice problems on the unit
  • Works on assigned projects, data collection, audits as assigned
  • Participates in the implementation of Performance Improvement initiatives


  • Collaborate with other members of a multidisciplinary team effectively, professionally and respectfully.
  • Chooses an appropriate and meaningful communication style when interacting with others: gives and accepts constructive feedback to/from peers.
  • Ensure appropriate follow up is arranged and communicated to the patient
  • Involves other disciplines as needed ie speech, dietician, physician
  • Consistently prioritizes work based on changes in patient condition, changes in assignment and unanticipated interruptions
  • Advocates with physicians on patient's behalf when necessary
  • Assures that the care provided is consistent with standards of care, evidence-based practices, national patient safety goals, core measures and other quality initiatives undertaken by the unit/hospital
  • Works with interdisciplinary team in identifying opportunities for improvement in patient care and patient/family satisfaction
  • Actively promotes and achieves customer satisfaction (patient, family, departments, physicians)

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $30.62per hour - $52.67per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
