The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice Dean, and with a secondary reporting line to the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Academic Affairs for matters related to faculty training and development, plays a pivotal role in guiding the daily operations and strategic direction of the online option of the Master of Science of Social Work (MSSW) at the Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW). Working in close collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for MSW Education, the incumbent ensures that the online option adheres to the accreditation standards and aligns with the school's ongoing outcome assessment efforts.

The Director possesses comprehensive knowledge of the school's curriculum, its organizational structure, accreditation standards, and policies. This role also requires a nuanced understanding of how courses relate to practicum education, advising, and the provision of student services within the current educational framework. The Director possesses key knowledge and skills in online pedagogy. The Director is responsible for assuring that the MSSW online option implements cutting-edge methods and best practices in online teaching and learning.

Responsibilities

Manage the day-to-day organization and strategic planning and implementation of the school's online education option:



  • Collaborate with the Director of Curricular Innovation and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development on developing and overseeing a pedagogy institute for all new CSSW faculty.
  • Develop and Oversee an Institute for Online Pedagogy and Technology specifically for online educators, both within and outside of CSSW.
  • Facilitate an online faculty development series for all faculty in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Academic Affairs.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Curricular Innovation on developing and overseeing a Power, Race, Oppression and Privilege Lens (PROP) Institute for all new faculty, and for educators outside of CSSW.
  • Partnering closely with the Offices of Enrollment, DEI, and Student Affairs, orchestrate the integration of student services for online education.
  • Organize, schedule, and lead meetings with faculty and administrators related to the online option of the MSSW program, in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Academic Affairs, or other members of the Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate directly with the Vice Dean and Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs to oversee the implementation and coordination of the online MSSW program option.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards by liaising with the Senior Associate Dean for MSW Education and the director of the Office of Institutional Research and Evaluation.
  • Manage the budget and resources for online education in consultation with the Vice Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Financial Management, and the Dean.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for online students, working closely with the Office of Student Affairs, to resolve questions and issues as needed.
  • Coordinate and support various online student events, such as orientation, graduation, virtual pop-up events (e.g., webinars for addressing capstone questions), and virtual events for the Writing Center and Library.
  • Collaborate on long-term planning for the online MSSW program option.
  • Represent the online option publicly, e.g., present at the annual CSSW Alumni Conference, the Digital Community @ Columbia, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and other conferences, events, and meetings.
  • Partner with online learning units across the University to relevant online learning initiatives and programs.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Direct experience with online education


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's degree preferred. Graduate education in social work, educational administration, urban planning, or a related field.
  • Experience with online forms and survey design programs is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of faculty and administrative roles and responsibilities.
  • Experience in social work education or a university setting.

  • Proficiency in computer applications like Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Prezi, and online research tools.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems (e.g. Canvas), and familiarity with Panopto, video editing software, and social media platforms.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work; some travel required.
