Summary:

The Principal, Strategic Planning serves as a key leader within the Strategic Planning team at UNC Health. In this role, the Principal partners with senior administrative and clinical leadership to establish the organization's strategic direction and overall priorities. This is a Director-equivalent role where a background in consulting, healthcare-focused strategy, or experience leading complex initiatives is strongly preferred. The Principal leads a portfolio of engagements and associated project teams across a wide range of topics, which may include but are not limited to the following:

  • System-level priority setting and development of UNC Health's enterprise strategy - Forward Together 2030 * Growth planning for clinical service lines (e.g., Children's, Cancer, Heart & Vascular, Neurosciences, Primary Care, Orthopedics, Women's, ancillary services, and all others)
  • Strategies for key geographic regions, markets, hospitals, and ambulatory footprint
  • Facility and ambulatory planning
  • Major system-level initiatives
  • Value-based care and new care delivery models
  • Partnership strategies and collaboration on Corporate Development opportunities

The Principal leads multiple engagements and project teams. As a project lead, the Principal establishes scope and develops well-designed project plans, organizes individual and project team responsibilities to meet project goals, partners with and frequently interacts with stakeholders including senior executives, uses hypothesis-driven approaches to problem solving with data-driven support for recommendations, and drives overall success of the engagement. The individual leads and mentors project teams which may include Engagement Managers, Sr. Consultants, and Consultants.

The Principal may serve as a key liaison and strategic partner to executive leaders and/or system service lines. A successful candidate will be highly motivated to take on complex project assignments, collaborative and effective working with cross-functional teams, analytical, and a strong problem-solver. The individual will be an expert storyteller and skilled at building narratives and recommendations for executive audiences, leadership forums, and Boards. The Principal will report to an Executive Director, Strategic Planning. The team is part of UNC Health's Strategy & Growth division, which includes Strategic Planning, Corporate Development, the Transformation Office, and Strategic Intelligence, and reports up to the Chief Transformation Officer and Chief Strategy and Growth Officer.

Responsibilities:

Aligns strategic goals across multiple initiatives. Stays on top of industry trends and emerging market activities to identify new opportunities. Project Management: Lead and simultaneously manage multiple complexes, cross-functional projects. Develops project plans and roadmaps. Mentors and develops high-performing teams. Supports a culture of collaboration and teamwork. Effectively allocates team resources to maximize project success. Can independently and confidently lead strategy engagements.

Client Engagement: Builds and maintains strong relationships with senior executives and other key decision-makers. Delivers exceptional client service and exceed expectations. Skilled at interpreting client needs and understanding what questions need to be solved. Effectively manages and resolves client concerns.

Leading People: Leads people toward meeting the organization's vision, mission, and goals. Provides an inclusive workplace that fosters the development of others, facilitates cooperation and teamwork, and supports constructive resolution of conflicts. Education Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* None required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Seven (7) years of relevant experience (e.g., consulting, healthcare administration, strategy, finance, business development, capital planning, or facilities planning) or two years at a top tier consulting firm with four (4) years of other relevant work experience.
* A minimum of five (5) years of management (people, project, or program) experience is required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* Experience leading strategy engagements and knowledge of consulting practices used by top firms.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and relationship-building abilities.
* High competency in Microsoft PowerPoint and proficiency building executive-ready presentations.
* Strong analytical skills and ability to simplify complex problems and data.
* Mentorship and ability to develop, grow, and strengthen the performance of consulting staff.
