Introduction to the Job

ASML US, including its affiliates and subsidiaries, bring together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world's leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, Netherlands and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices inChandler, Arizona, San Jose and San Diego, California, Wilton, Connecticut, and Hillsboro, Oregon.

Role and Responsibilities

As a well-rounded mechatronics engineer in this position you will work on mechatronics, motion control, product and system integration and software functionality, all specific to ASML products. The main focus will be mechatronics and control systems on advanced modules in metrology tools. You should have direct experience in the design and test of mechatronic systems and control systems.

As a Mechatronics Design Engineer, you will:

  • Design and develop custom mechatronics systems with a cross sector team (e.g. translating stages, linear motors, BLDC's, sensors, servos, actuators, dynamics, controls, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot designs to determine potential risks, failure modes and corrective actions
  • Be responsible for "sustaining engineering" tasks, resolving equipment design issues in a timely fashion as they arise at customer sites
  • Participate in concept designs and experiments for future equipment and subsystems
  • Run complex mechatronic systems for test and qualification of design changes
  • Design quality products using six sigma and lean process techniques for robust designs
  • Create documentation for product designs and operations to be used in a clean manufacturing environment
  • Assess and address technical and operational risks based on input of architects and design engineers
  • Coordinate external suppliers and developers involved in product design

Education and Experience

To help us tackle the technical challenges we face, you will need experience working on high-tech products and with complex processes.

As a Mechatronics Design Engineer, you will need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant Engineering field (e.g. Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, etc.)
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience or a graduate level degree
  • Mechatronics engineering background or specialization in closely related areas such as robotics or other fields
  • Experience with PID controllers, linear and nonlinear calibrations, flexible dynamics
  • Experience with magnetic linear actuators and magnetic levitation systems a plus
  • Basic experience with mechatronics behavior predictive modeling and methods in MATLAB/SIMULINK or similar tools, including "first principle" engineering equations and other techniques, particularly applied to control system simulation and implementation

Skills

Working at the cutting edge of tech, you will always have new challenges and new problems to solve - and working together is the only way do that. You will not work in a silo. Instead, you will be part of a creative, dynamic work environment where you will collaborate with supportive colleagues. There is always space for creative and unique points of view. You will have the flexibility and trust to choose how best to tackle tasks and solve problems.

To thrive in this job, you will need the following skills:

  • Ability to apply "classical control theory" and "digital control theory" (e.g. frequency domain, stability (Nyquist/Bode plots), Velocity-Acceleration-Jerk (VAJ), feedback/feedforward, dynamics, gain and phase, transfer functions, continuous/discrete feedback control, real time controls, etc.)
  • Ability to derive conclusions from analyses and make practical recommendations
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills in English, including presenting results based on strong statistical evidence to audiences of a wide range of technical abilities
  • Exposure to multi-disciplinary projects, such as imaging/optical systems, semiconductor or lithography preferred but not required
  • Good planning and analytical skills, ability to lead multifunctional teams
  • Proven professional success in prior project or task management
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills required including presenting results to audiences of a wide range of technical abilities
  • Able to "lead", not just "manage", a team
  • Ability to multitask and make quick priority calls on a daily basis
  • Relevant knowledge in one technical discipline (mono or multi)
  • Can observe and respond to people and situations and interact with others encountered in the course of work
  • Can learn and apply new information or skills
