Job Summary:

This position provides instruction within the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Shelter Medicine Program's (UWSMP) Maddie's Shelter Medicine Teaching and Training Programs.

This position will provide teaching to veterinary students, interns and residents (if applicable) through clinical training, didactic teaching in rounds, and clinical outreach. Clinical training and outreach currently occur at Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) and in communities where UWSMP is providing access to care services.


Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include teaching and supervising students, interns, and residents (if applicable) on life-saving practices and procedures; training students, interns, and residents to find and examine multiple solutions to the problems that shelter animals and communities might face; pursuing excellence in the clinical skills of trainees; and supporting other educational aspects of the program as needed. UWSMP has a close partnership with DCHS and the Clinical Instructor must effectively collaborate with shelter veterinarians and other staff to represent UWSMP and work successfully within the shelters? practices to uphold this partnership. The Clinical Instructor will coordinate and lead UWSMP Community House Calls Program, which involves weekly veterinary house call appointments arranged by local partners and engage with development of trainee involvement in other access to care programs. The Clinical Instructor will primarily be working at DCHS, with some occasional travel expected.

The Clinical Instructor will also participate in various administrative responsibilities pertaining to Maddie's Teaching and Training Programs, including recruiting, scheduling, providing trainee feedback, grading, work tracking and other operational activities related to the success of trainee programs and meeting grant funding expectations. This position will assist UWSMP Director with implementation and continued development of trainee programs to ensure program goals are being met for both the student rotation and internship programs. Other duties include providing population-level continuing education and consultation for shelter staff, and to be involved in instruction via the UWSMP's Maddie's Shelter Medicine Fellowship program, Maddie's Shelter Medicine Intensive, and Maddie's Shelter Medicine Elective course.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree with specialized training or experience in Shelter Medicine, by start date.


Qualifications:

At least two (2) years of experience working in or with animal shelters.

Experience with instruction, mentoring, providing feedback, and setting a positive community for learning.

At least one year of experience with instructional and consultation activities.

Proficiency in practical and tactful identification and articulation of strengths, problems, and possible solutions at both an organizational and individual instructional level.


License/Certification:

Required
Wisconsin Veterinary License
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain Wisconsin licensure to practice veterinary medicine, by start date.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Additional Information:

The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, sharp attention to detail, and strong organizational skills. They will have experience in population health management for companion animals, high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter, and clinical practice in a shelter setting. The candidate must show creativity and a proven ability to initiate projects and see them through to a successful completion. Must have a demonstrated ability to work well independently and collaborate in a team environment. Must have the ability to take direction as well as provide leadership. Must be comfortable working with people of all levels of expertise.
