National Grid is hiring a Senior Counsel to support the New England Environmental Permitting team. This is a hybrid position that will be based out of our offices in Waltham, MA.

Job Purpose

National Grid is seeking an in-house environmental permitting attorney to work in the Environmental-Legal practice group, as part of the General Counsel function. The ideal candidate will have relevant experience as a practicing attorney, demonstrating strong analytical, research, and interpersonal skills, as well as persuasive oral and written communication capabilities. Responsibilities include practicing before local, state, and federal permitting authorities and advising clients regarding all aspects of environmental permitting, including matters related to electric and gas infrastructure, compliance filings, and emerging legislative/regulatory requirements. This role will include drafting and filing petitions, testimony, compliance documents, and customer correspondence, as well as representing the business in regulatory proceedings and meetings before various permitting authorities and with stakeholder groups. This position is a full-time, hybrid position with a reporting location of Waltham, MA.

Key Accountabilities

* Provide expert legal advice and counsel with respect to all aspects of environmental permitting to support business clients in achieving their objectives.
* Offer creative and innovative legal approaches for the benefit of the business client.
* Regularly draft, review, and file environmental permitting documents with the local, state and federal permitting authorities, including testimony, petitions, and compliance items.
* Exercise independent judgment on complex legal matters.
* Independently perform research and legal analysis including legislation and regulations.
* Advocate effectively complex company positions both internally and externally to National Grid.
* Continuously seek ways to do things better to drive greater efficiencies for the business client.
* Demonstrate the ability to anticipate obstacles and think ahead about next steps.
* Demonstrate the ability to understand the connection between the business and relevant research or information.
* Manage numerous legal matters efficiently and effectively, including those with significant strategic, financial, precedential, or reputational impact.
* Manage outside counsel to provide excellent service and significant value; challenge outside counsel to staff matters appropriately.
* Establish a high level of confidence with management, business clients, and external stakeholders.
* Demonstrate the ability to apply and distill complex theories and learned concepts appropriately and explain the same to the business client.
* Identify significant corporate risks in business matters; provide legal guidance to the business and constructively challenge risk issues; work with the business to develop appropriate mitigation measures.
* Express commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and support events and/or initiatives of interest throughout the organization.
* Recognize and actively seek to join and attend external forums/practice groups.
* Keep current with industry laws, regulations, and trends.

Qualifications

* Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
* Admission in good standing to the Massachusetts State Bar (or evidence of initiating process to secure Massachusetts State Bar license and subsequent admission to the Bar) (NH and or VT bar admission is a plus).
* Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to draft and file legal documents with regulatory agencies or courts.
* Exhibits high personal standards of commitment and ethics.
* Strong sense of teamwork; ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and on multidisciplinary teams.

Salary

$155k - $190k a year
