Overview

The US Oncology Network is looking for a Coding Specialist Team Lead to join our team at Texas Oncology! This full time remote position will support the E/M department at our Central Business Office at 3001 E President George Bush Hwy Richardson, TX 75082. Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday; 8:00am to 5:00pm.

This position can be either a level 1 or Sr based on candidate experience.

What does the Coding Specialist Team Lead do?

The Coding Specialist Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the medical coding team, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in coding processes. This role involves mentoring and training coders, managing workflow, and collaborating with other departments to support optimal revenue cycle management.


Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership:
    • Supervise and support a team of medical coders, promoting a collaborative work environment.
    • Assist supervisor with preparing performance evaluations by providing constructive feedback about team members.
  • Coding Accuracy:
    • Ensure that all medical coding is performed accurately and in accordance with established guidelines and regulations.
    • Review and audit coded records for adherence to coding standards and compliance via code review or monthly audit process.
  • Training and Development:
    • Onboarding training for new employees in the coding department, focusing on system processes.
    • Serve as a resource for coding-related questions and clarifications.
  • Workflow Management:
    • Assist supervisor with managing daily coding operations, including assigning coding tasks and monitoring workflow to meet productivity and quality targets.
    • Identify and resolve any coding-related issues or obstacles that may arise in the workflow.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with other departments, including billing, compliance, and clinical staff, to ensure seamless processes and communication.
    • Participate in monthly leadership huddles to discuss coding trends and resolution of complex coding issues.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Implement quality assurance measures to maintain high coding standards and accuracy.
    • Track and analyze coding metrics and reports to identify areas for improvement.
  • Compliance:
    • Stay current with industry regulations, coding guidelines, and best practices to ensure compliance with federal and state laws.
    • Assist in the preparation for audits and implement corrective actions as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position will have the following background and experience:

Level 1

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • Minimum one year of coding medical experience required, three years experience medical coding preferred.
  • One year in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.
  • Applicable certification preferred. Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Completion of a course in medical record technology.
  • Knowledge of medical records coding procedures and knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT-4 Coding Systems highly desirable.

Level Sr (in addition to level 1 requirements)

  • Minimum five years medical coding experience, prior oncology experience preferred.
  • Certification as RHIT preferred.
