Job Objective:

As the Comptroller you will provide leadership, expertise, foresight, oversight and management supervision for financial accounting operations for The Salvation Army Indiana Division; in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America (US GAAP) and ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do:



  • Provide technical accounting support to management and subordinates.
  • Ensure creditability of finance group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends, and forecasts.
  • Manage the cash flow position of the divisional bank accounts.
  • Manage required independent audits, including notes to financial statements and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA), and other financial reports as required.
  • Provide oversight and Operational management for the internal audits of divisional funds by Territorial Headquarters.
  • Provide oversight and Operational management for the budget preparation process of all Salvation Army funds and units and their timely submission to the Divisional Finance Board for approval.
  • Provide oversight of the preparation and filing of financial statements and other financial documents for all divisional operating funds, and other units as necessary, including reports prepared for independent auditors, DHQ management, Territorial Headquarters, United Way, State of Indiana, and others.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the consolidated financial worksheet at the fiscal year-end for Territorial Headquarters, including elimination of inter-company transactions, as directed by THQ.
  • Provide liaison support and review processes between The Salvation Army and the management companies for financial statements, independent audits, internal audits, operating budgets, tax returns, and other accounting functions of the four units under outside management, including, but not limited to Booth Manors, Carpenter Apts., and Barton Center.
  • Provide oversight and Operational management for the reporting and paying of Indiana Sales Tax to the Indiana Department of Revenue for all Indiana Sales Taxes collected by Salvation Army operations as necessary.
  • Review and release cash disbursements (checks and ACH transfers) from divisional and unit bank accounts.
  • Review journal entries and check requests for all bank accounts as necessary.
  • Review reconciliations of bank statements, included in the divisional and unit general ledgers.
  • Provide oversight and operational management support for the cash flow position of bank accounts included in the divisional general ledgers. Review corps and all other units' cash flow reports and address as directed by supervisor.
  • Provide strategic foresight development for continuous evaluation of short and long term financial objectives.
  • Serve as a bank account administrator and maintain a liaison position with the banks included in the divisional general ledgers.
  • Serve as security administrator to manage access to online banking services for the bank accounts included in the divisional accounts and other accounts as directed.
  • Manage due diligence processes when necessary to assess possible advantageous changes in accounting related service providers (banking products providers, payroll products providers, independent auditors)
  • Attend seminars and conferences as requested. Prepare presentations for Divisional Finance Board and other groups as directed.
  • Research solutions to financial operational scenarios as they arise.
  • Assist in strategic planning to help provide sustainable financial solutions.
  • Work in conjunction with the development department on fund raising initiatives and events as assigned.
  • Other tasks as assigned by leadership


Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. MBA in Accounting recommended

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: 5 years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, preferably in nonprofit environment.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.

Indiana CPA certificate preferred

Skills/Abilities:



  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP, and non-profit counting
  • Preparation of complete financial statements, including footnotes and Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA), in conformity with US GAAP
  • Experience in eliminating inter-company transactions in consolidating financial statements
  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army's policies and its Missional structure is helpful
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices
  • Proficient in computer software (Microsoft Office, General Ledger Accounting software, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is critical
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet numerous deadlines is important
  • Ability to multi-task within financial responsibilities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to be proactive and forward thinking in office procedures and meeting the needs of The Salvation Army
  • Ability to supervise others positively and efficiently

Supervisory Responsibility:

The position oversees the Finance Department
