Job Summary

Involves all aspects of the medication use process, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring. Partners with physicians and other clinicians to provide treatments and advice to patients, records patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies. Advises physicians in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design. Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients. Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services, at Parnassus Heights, Mount Zion, and Mission Bay Campuses, provide a full range of services for patients cared for by the Medical Center as well as its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to, drug procurement, storage, and security; safe accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department encompasses with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, research, and public services. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Department of Pharmaceutical Services share its philosophy of pharmaceutical care.

Required Qualifications


  • Knowledge in Pharmacy practice and industry best practices in optimizing the use of medication to treat patients. Stays updated on pharmacy regulations, drug products, and developments in research and design.
  • Knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, medical center, and UC policies and protocols including medicine storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatment.
  • Knowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration to effectively lead and motivate others.
  • Conflict resolution skills to resolve personnel issues and counsel assigned staff to develop cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex, challenging environment.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change.
  • Customer service orientation to respond quickly and with empathy to patient issues.
  • Ability to organize operations in an efficient and effective manner through improving workflow systems and protocols.
  • Ability to collaborate within and across departments to coordinate daily Pharmacy activities and resolve problems.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, patients, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.
  • Proven analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution.
  • Ability to resolve patient issues and find solutions that satisfy all parties.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen actively, consider all points of view with an open mind, soliciting and incorporating ideas when appropriate.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology.
  • Knowledge of available information technology software in the pharmaceutical field.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.
  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of California

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certified
  • MBA or MHA
  • PGY1 In Pharmacy Practice or Hospital Administration, or equivalent experience

License/Certification


  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent training.
  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
