Job Summary
Position Description
The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas invites applications from accomplished individuals with an earned PhD or equivalent degree in engineering to serve as the Inaugural Director of our First Year Program starting fall 2025. The successful candidate is expected to provide leadership in shaping and coordinating our program and courses (structure, curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment); promoting consistency in course contents, standards and instructional modes across different classes; supervising all first-year faculty; coordinating with faculty teaching in the program and related departments (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry); and teaching sections of the relevant classes as appropriate. The First Year Program Director will be appointed to a faculty position in the appropriate department as a non-tenure system Professor of Instruction (open rank) or as a tenure system Associate or Full Professor. The appointment and rank will be based on experience and qualifications.
We seek an individual with strong accomplishments in disciplinary and/or engineering education research, who has an established pedagogical track record in working with undergraduate engineering students. Additionally, the candidate should have a passion for experiential learning, partnering with external and internal stakeholders for relevant student projects. An interest in engineering education best practices, research, and assessment is desirable.
The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD or equivalent in engineering or computer science or a related discipline is required prior to employment. Applicants for a tenure system appointment should have an active program of externally funded research in a discipline aligned with one of the school's six departments (biomedical, computer science, electrical and computer, materials science, mechanical, and systems). Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
Additional expectations include:
* Substantial record of productive involvement in curricular and pedagogical developments in the teaching of engineering.
* Evidence of active scholarship related to curricular or pedagogical issues in engineering.
* Successful experience in supporting the academic success of engineering students.
* Strong commitment to teaching excellence.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Demonstrated knowledge and interest in first year engineering programs and initiatives.
* Experience with data collection and analysis: ability to collect, analyze, and assess data related to student success, student learning outcomes, and program success.
Preferred Education and Experience:
* Teaching experience with first year engineering students; be committed to project-based learning; demonstrated student and program assessment skills.
* Thorough understanding of principles, practices and procedures involved in FYE program development, theoretical models, best practices and current issues supporting in first-year student transition, development, and retention.
* Experience in leading collaborative teams of faculty in program delivery.
* Significant and increasingly responsible supervisory experience.
The School
The Jonsson School, home to six dynamic departments (biomedical, computer science, electrical and computer, materials science, mechanical, and systems), is one of the most rigorous, technologically advanced and diverse programs in the country.
