Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $53,500 - $92,100. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $53,500 - $66,400/yr.

About the Job

Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean for Student Advocacy and Retention, the Case Manager serves as the nexus of information and integration for the campus's response to students experiencing varying degrees of need and/or distress. The incumbent is readily accessible to students, staff, faculty, parents and family members (when applicable) who are concerned about a distressed student. The Case Manager works closely with key offices to identify and intervene as early as possible with students who may be experiencing basic need insecurities, distress, or other challenges where they would benefit from advocacy and support services.

Duties include consulting about students who may need support as well as providing general information about case management services during University trainings and events such as New Student Orientation; working directly with students referred by various campus partners to help resolve complex situations and advocate on their behalf, fielding calls, emails and referrals regarding, coordinating responses and services for individual students, undertaking research on national best practices, and participating on "Student Response Team." The Case Manager will also support the activities, programs and services associated with the functions of the Dean of Students office.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Advocacy and Coordination of Responses to Students in Distress

  • The position provides direct student support in meeting with students to assess and provide assistance regarding distressing and sensitive situations they may be navigating. Manages students of concern cases that require gathering information developing recommendations for response, taking the initiative to mobilize appropriate responses and/or services, and provides information to the student, student's family (as appropriate) and conveys information to other units including Counseling and Psychological Services, Academic Advisers, Basic Needs, Faculty, Residence Education, Identity Centers, Campus Police, and other campus entities, ensuring that appropriate resources are available and post-intervention strategies are mobilized on behalf of the student and the campus community.
  • Provides administrative interface, coordinating with various campus partners to ensure coherent integration of campus and community resources for individual students who face challenges with academic, health, conduct, substance abuse, financial and social issues.
  • In consultation and collaboration with units across the University, serves as a point of contact for members of the campus community, who are concerned about a student. The incumbent will consult about a student, provide resources and connect students to offices across campus such as Counseling and Psychological Services, Academic Advising, Residence Education, among others, develop action plans, and follow up with students, staff and faculty as appropriate. The incumbent will also be an active member of the UC System Wide Case Management Team. Responds to inquiries about distressed students from faculty, staff, students and parents/family members. Provides information and resources to appropriate campus services; may refer to the Behavioral Intervention Team for high level and high-risk incidents.

Education and Outreach

  • Works with a broad cross section of campus departments (e.g., Orientation, CARE, Student Accessibility Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Residence Education to develop and implement marketing campaigns for the campus' student mental health messages and information.
  • Works collaboratively with other campus units and departments on the provision of campus-wide training and programs as well as publications regarding responding to students in distress or who are experiencing basic need insecurities. Develops and delivers specialized curriculum and training programs as requested by campus departments regarding responding to students in distress, and educational workshops about Dean of Students services and programs.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs, Education, Counseling, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Advanced degree Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Public Health, or Related Field (Preferred)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Direct experience adjudicating University student conduct cases (3 years).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple operations and related systems and procedures.
  • Skill in interpreting, writing, establishing, and implementing policy.

  • Ability to schedule/direct the efforts of others to achieve goals.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with all University constituents.
