The College of Letters and Science (L&S) is the largest college on the Berkeley campus, consisting of 38 academic departments and other instructional, research, and support units. The college is led by an executive dean and divided into five divisions: arts and humanities, biological sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, and undergraduate programs. The Biological Sciences Division comprises of two departments: Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB), Integrative Biology (IB), and the Physical Education Program (PEP). The Biological Sciences Division, which operates independently, is made up of the Dean, Senior Associate Dean, Associate Dean, Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration, Assistant Dean of Development, Assistant Dean of Academic Personnel, Academic Coordinator II Diversity Director (DD), and Executive Assistant to the Dean. The Biological Sciences Diversity Director's Office (BADOO) is part of the L&S Deans' Office in the Division of Biological Sciences. The Associate Director (AD) and Diversity Director (DD) work directly with deans, campus leaders, faculty, staff, and students from various campus units and the Berkeley campus community to increase diversity at all levels, procure program funding, and develop and implement diversity, equity, inclusiveness, and belonging strategies to ensure a welcoming environment for all. The AD reports directly to the DD, and the supervision level received from the DD is a general direction, typical of managerial roles. Additionally, the AD attends and participates in the dean's staff meetings. Application Review Date

Leads Complex Program Development and Policy Analysis (30%) Leads efforts to evaluate and enhance academic programs by applying in-depth analyses of program structures and policies across multiple departments. Develops strategies to improve program effectiveness and organizational efficiency, ensuring alignment with institutional goals. As a co-director, formulates new policies and processes to resolve complex organizational issues, meeting program timelines and compliance requirements. This involves the creation and administration of new systems and processes for program development, ensuring all initiatives are executed effectively. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (15%) Leads initiatives to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) within academic programs, developing and advocating for policies that improve diversity in recruitment and retention efforts. Regularly collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to implement and monitor new programs and outreach strategies that support underrepresented students. Proposes and leads the execution of DEIB initiatives that enhance program inclusiveness and ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed. Leads efforts to foster a welcoming and inclusive academic environment, ensuring DEIB goals are integrated into the broader organizational strategy. Data Collection, Analysis, and Evaluation (15%) Leads the design and execution of data collection initiatives, analyzing complex datasets related to student demographics, program outcomes, and career trajectories. Administers the Coalition for Next Generation Life Sciences (NGLS) data project, ensuring data transparency and compliance with campus policies. Proposes new methods for data evaluation to enhance program reporting, presenting findings to internal and external stakeholders. Collaborates with departments and external agencies to share data, providing detailed reports and recommendations that inform program improvements and strategic decisions. Recruitment, Outreach, and Admissions (15%) Develops and implements recruitment strategies aimed at increasing the diversity and number of applicants to graduate programs. Accountable for outreach initiatives at major national conferences, such as SACNAS and ABRCMS, representing the organization to prospective students and academic partners. Administers the admissions process, using complex analyses to evaluate applicant qualifications and selection criteria. Regularly collaborates with graduate admissions committees, faculty, and external partners to refine recruitment strategies and improve applicant selection. Leads efforts to improve the admissions process, proposing new systems and timelines to ensure efficient and timely admission decisions. A member of the MCB and IB graduate admissions committees. Student Mentoring and Advising (10%) Develops and implements strategies for undergraduate and graduate student mentoring and advising, providing in-depth, individualized support to students navigating graduate programs. Guides students through complex academic and research challenges, using expertise in graduate admissions and academic program development to advise them on their research careers. Proposes and leads initiatives to improve student success and retention through workshops, one-on-one advising, and targeted mentoring strategies. Regularly collaborates with faculty and department heads to improve student support services and ensure that mentorship aligns with broader academic goals. Budget Management and Grant Writing (10%) Leads budget planning and management for academic programs, developing and submitting detailed budget proposals and justifications. Write grants, securing funding for various academic initiatives. Implements SPO/contracts and grants campus policies and procedures in submitting proposals. Works closely with internal departments and external funding agencies to ensure financial strategies align with program goals and compliance regulations. Provides analyses for complex budgetary and funding challenges, proposing solutions that enhance resource allocation and financial sustainability. Regularly monitors expenditures and provides recommendations for financial improvements. Leadership and Strategic Planning (5%) Leads high-level strategic planning and policy development for academic programs, working with directors, faculty, and campus leaders to align program objectives with institutional goals. Serves on strategic and policy planning committees, providing leadership and expertise in program development. Regularly guides discussions with senior management, faculty, and external stakeholders to develop proposals that support the organization's broader strategic direction. Makes high-level contacts internally and externally, negotiating and advocating for new programmatic solutions that advance the mission of the organization. Required Qualifications
