Job Summary

Provides life safety support for the Wellness and Recreation Aquatic Center pools at BBC and MMC as primary lifeguard and swimming instructor. Assist with the operation, care, event set-up and breakdown for recreation facilities at both campuses.

  • Serves as the primary lifeguard and swim instructor; supervises the swimming pool and surrounding facility to ensure the safety of all facility users at both campuses.
  • Patrols and observes swimming pool to ensure appropriate pool usage. Prevents tag games, fighting, and other infractions of rules around pool area.
  • Conducts swimming lessons, aquatic programs, and swimming meets as required. Prepares and distributes swimming lesson materials.
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate chemical levels in swimming pool water; conducts water tests, maintaining records of results, in accordance with the Florida Department of Health guidelines. Reports substandard pool conditions to supervisor.
  • Performs custodial services to maintain a clean and orderly facility and its surrounding areas, including the locker rooms, hallways, weight rooms, bathrooms, and offices. Ensures that benches and other movable equipment are kept at assigned locations. Assists in sweeping and mopping around pool area and building, and picking up wastepaper and trash at pool or bayside area. Vacuums pools. Paints machinery and equipment to protect against rust.
  • Responds to emergency situations and assists or rescues swimmers in distress utilizing established rescue techniques. Administers first aid to cuts or other injuries suffered by swimmers and administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as necessary. Reports emergencies to supervisor.
  • Assists with the set up and breakdowns of events at the outdoor recreation facilities at both campuses. Provides general level of maintenance and cleaning support for outdoor recreation events and programs.
  • Enforces pool safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order.

  • Answers inquiries from pool patrons.
  • Coordinates and may conduct in-service staff trainings and safety drills. Assists in in-service training sessions in the use of emergency and first-aid equipment.
  • Compiles, records, and maintains simple data. Ensures accident reports, records sheets, and other types of reports are properly completed and forwarded to the Pools Supervisor. Maintains records and develops reports concerning pool operations and aquatic recreational activities.
  • Provides on-going training/orientation on department policies and procedures for new employees as directed by the Pools Supervisor.
  • Assists pool supervisor with the developments and maintenance of all temporary and part-time lifeguard work schedules to ensure appropriate coverage during pool operation hours.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. Is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience, and/or vocational/technical training. Valid Florida Driver's License CDL - Class E

Departmental Requirements

The following valid certificates must be possessed at time of application and maintained valid throughout employment: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/AED
