Position Description

The Institute for Peace & Conflict in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month Research Professor as the DPAA Research Partner Fellow to begin February 1, 2025.

About the College

About the Department/School/Area

Established in 2017, the mission of the Institute for Peace & Conflict at Texas Tech University is to enhance and expand critical research, creative scholarship, and classroom teaching in the fields of war and society, global peacemaking, conflict resolution, and society's response to such efforts. IPAC will host conferences and events, support graduate student research, and promote international cooperation and collaboration with students, faculty, and other organizations who share our vision and mission to better understand these important events and issues.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Research Professor title designates an individual appointed, usually full time, to a research position. In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in the area of research.

As a faculty member in the Institute for Peace & Conflict, College of Arts & Sciences, and as the DPAA Research Partner Fellow, you will be expected to conduct historical research to assist in locating American MIAs from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Duties include: consult with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii as well as with Detachment 2 in Hanoi, Socialist Republic of Vietnam; conduct research and assist other researchers at the Vietnam Center and Sam Johnson Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech University; supervise graduate students on translation projects; teach upper division courses in military history, to include The History of "Small" Wars and Monuments, Memory and Commemoration in consultation with the Department of History; and translate documents from Vietnamese and French to English as well as from English to Vietnamese and French.

Faculty Qualifications

• Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in U.S. History with a concentration in military history.
• Applicants must be fluent in English, Vietnamese, and have a basic knowledge of French.
• Applicants must have experience teaching collegiate upper division courses in military history as well as survey courses in U.S. History, and must demonstrate knowledge of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War through research projects and coursework (as a student or teacher).
• Applicants must have either a record of peer-reviewed publication(s), submissions indicative of an active pursuit of peer-reviewed publications OR evidence of international conference presentations.
