Job Title: System Administrator (NWS 00743)
THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 500 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer's mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions.
Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Global Security Directorate has an opening for an experienced System Administrator within Z Program/Biological Science and Security to provide support installing Linux servers, Windows laptops, and network infrastructure, as well as configuring the servers and laptops to interoperate, and the software that provides tracking capabilities within this system, at state and local health laboratories around the United States.
Essential Duties
- Pre-configure servers, laptops, printers, barcode scanners, and any other required hardware for shipment to remote locations
- Travel to locations around the United States for 2-5 days per installation
- Interface and coordinate with laboratorians and managers at these remote sites
- Install servers, laptops, printers, barcode scanners, and network infrastructure as appropriate.
- Test new installation, and provide short term on-site support
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in a computer-related field or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and flexibility to adjust to changing deadlines.
- Ability to execute sound judgments in a highly dynamic environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment and document, present and explain technical information.
- Experience working with customers and handling issues with confidentiality and professionalism.
- Intermediate troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, consistent follow-through to assure issue is resolved and policies and procedures are followed.
- Ability to consistently follow procedural guidelines.
- Experience developing and documenting work processes.
- Experience administering, troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and securing Windows and Mac Linux hardware, software, applications, and operating systems.
- Ability to maintain component configurations and inspect computer and network hardware.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Experience with LLNL, DOE, and NNSA cyber security policies, procedures, and implementations.
- Knowledge of computer security concepts and practices for one or more common operating system (e.g., Windows, Mac, or Linux).
- Information security training.
Special Requirements
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
