Job Summary

Reporting to the Patient Care Director of Adult Acute Care, the 13L Unit Director has 24-hour responsibility over 13L operations. 13L is a fast-paced General Surgery unit caring for Bariatric, Vascular, Plastics, OHNS, OMFS, and Urology patients. Wound/Ostomy and Pain management is a specialty skill among the nursing staff on 13L. The incumbent will oversee 70-85 FTEs with $20M operational budget. Strong hospital operations, excellent leadership and fiscal management while closely collaborating with physicians and other key multidisciplinary General Surgery Team members is essential to this role.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253,901 - $269,436 (Annual Rate).

Location 13th floor of the Long Building, UCSF Medical Center @ 505 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco, California

Patient Population: Pre-operative and post-operative Laproscopic Bariatric surgery, grafts/flap surgery, LeForts, post-ICU Tracheostomy, Colostomy, Ileostomy, Urostomy, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, and Fistula management. Within this unit you will find interdisciplinary coordination with teams of physicians, nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, case managers, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and physical therapists. In addition, there are opportunities to teach and participate in ground-breaking research.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS by American Heart Association
  • A minimum of 1 year (recent experience) of nursing management/supervisory and administrative experience in a fast-paced surgery unit in an academic medical center or highly matrixed organization
  • Strong hospital operations experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services
  • Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines
  • Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience in a union environment
  • Knowledge of Lean principles
  • Engaged with frontline quality champions on improving quality and key nursing indicators
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or relevant area preferred
  • ANCC RN specialty certification in Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive-Advanced
  • National Certification for Specialty

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS by American Heart Association
