Editorial Writer

The Los Angeles Times has an opening for a full-time member of the editorial board. The principal duties are to research, report, pitch and write unsigned editorials as well as participate in editorial board discussions. State and local issues will be a primary focus of this position, but the writer should also be prepared to contribute on a variety of topics in the news.

The ideal candidate is a clear thinker and a powerful writer, able to present complex arguments in a concise way. Editorials require nuance, logic and intellectual honesty, but they also need to be authoritative and engaging. The Los Angeles Times editorial page strives to reflect the most compelling concerns and interests of the people of California, particularly the diverse communities of Southern California.

The ideal editorial writer is open-minded, eager to engage with many points of view, collegial and collaborative.

Because the board frequently meets with newsmakers, thinkers and officials, this writer should feel comfortable with public speaking, including appearances on broadcast programs, videos, podcasts and other platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Write and report editorials to meet daily deadlines
• Research and pitch editorials to the board on a daily basis
• Attend meetings and engage with policymakers and newsmakers
• Attend and participate in regular editorial board meetings and other meetings as needed
• Adhere to the company's editorial ethics guidelines and all company policies regarding employee conduct Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

• At least five years of experience reporting and writing
• A strong understanding of state and local issues
• Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills
• Ability to report on complex topics with accuracy, fairness and understanding
• Excellent writing skills that can express ideas concisely and persuasively
• Ability to meet daily deadlines Familiarity with law or public policy debates a plus
• Ability to use software and publishing tools required for the job
• Ability to work closely with others in a team environment Impeccable interpersonal skills
• An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $91,354 to $122,117 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
