Job Description Summary:This position is an early-level, hybrid engineering position in Boulder, Colorado responsible for helping build and maintain network installations across all of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research's (UCAR's) facilities. The expectation is that this position will require onsite work 3-4 days a week under normal circumstances but could require periods of full-time onsite.

This position entails a broad range of responsibilities including contributing to, designing, planning, engineering, procurement, installation, configuration, programming, maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation of network infrastructure and equipment. This position requires both hands-on and remote work. Work will be performed as a lead or a team member, working directly with network engineers, network technicians, NCAR/UCAR/UCP programs, labs, divisions, external contractors, and the scientific community who use the NETS services. What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

  • Project Support:

    Participates as part of a team in support of network equipment and network infrastructure projects as needed or directed by NETS management.

  • Assists in designing, planning, ordering, installing, configuring, integrating, testing, optimizing, and troubleshooting a controller-based wired and wireless LAN and WAN system including switching, UPS, IPT, and Ethernet out-of-band hardware.

  • Maintaining knowledge of state-of-the-art networking and telecommunications technologies, costs, and user requirements in order to formulate plans, justifications, and specifications for NETS projects and to make recommendations to NETS management.

  • Contributing to developing progressive methods to effectively and efficiently manage and structure project activities.

  • Network Documentation

  • Develops and maintains documentation of network physical plant, equipment, and network projects at all UCAR and FRGP sites and data centers in AutoCAD. Maintains working drawings for NETS, and attends or leads CAD training and coordination meetings as assigned by the management.

  • Uninterruptible Power Systems and Environmental Monitoring

    Assisting as part of the team responsible for all aspects of installing and maintaining NETS Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and environmental monitoring systems hardware and infrastructure as needed or directed by NETS management.

  • Contributes to planning, designing, ordering, maintaining inventory, documentation, standards, troubleshooting, and installation. Utilize, develop, and maintain electronic and mechanical schematics, maintenance logs, and diagnostic, resource, and user documentation manuals, and UPS configuration files. Trains and mentors other NETS staff.

  • Renders service on a daily and 24-hour-on-call basis as a consultant in solving network and data communications-related problems.

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:
Education and Experience (Required/Desired):

An Associate's degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, or Electrical Engineering, and three to four years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • Demonstrated knowledge of designing, configuring, and maintaining cellular DAS, and RF wireless systems.

  • TileFlow CFD Modeling software user

  • Sunbird (Power IQ) User / Administrator

  • Demonstrated proficiency in evaluating and utilizing project management software and tools.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's license and a driving record compliant with UCAR's liability insurance requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required/Desired)

Knowledge of computer hardware and software (on both client and server platforms) including one or more of the following: Microsoft Windows, MAC OS, or Unix variant, Linux, and Google and Microsoft business applications.

Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols, SNMP, and network management principles and software packages.

Familiarity working on teams for the evaluation, planning, installation, maintenance, documentation, problem-solving, and troubleshooting of physical and wireless LANs, MANs, WANs, and telecommunications systems including telecommunications pathways, twisted-pair, coaxial, and fiber optics.

The ability to create and maintain network documentation using AutoCAD, and the ability to use tools such as DCIM, Gliffy, or PatchManager drawing tools.

Knowledge of test equipment and diagnostic tools such as frequency counters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, Volt Ohm Meters, logic analyzers, electrical and optical time-domain reflectometers, optical spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, optical visual fault finders, network analysis equipment, and intelligent LAN Media testers.

Familiarity with installing, documenting, and maintaining telecommunications scale Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems including a working knowledge of National Electric Codes, and state and local electrical and building codes.

Working knowledge of network specifications, standards, and building processes and systems.

Good written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and concisely both orally and written including using electronic mail, VTC, Chat, and presentation platforms to individuals and groups. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to feedback from individuals, groups, and committees.

Stays abreast of relevant new and emerging technologies. Knowledge of state-of-the-art network software and hardware technology related to area of responsibility and sharing knowledge with NETS and/or constituents and for informing networks or networking projects that NETS supports.
