Job Summary

Designs, implements, and oversees all technical and administrative operations for the 7 Biomedical Engineering Services cost centers within the large, multiple functional Clinical Technologies family of functional areas and cost centers. Accountable for the overall administrative planning and coordination of the staffing, fiscal and material resources. Assists with the development and implementation of new equipment, systems, service level agreements, polices and policies. Ensures equipment and technology of a clinical specialty are configured, maintained, and performing to standards. Deploys new technology and implements changes to equipment management workflows and operational processes to ensure the clinical specialty technology and systems is optimally configured to support patient care and meets all applicable codes and regulations. Direct reports are typically supervisors and managers.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $144,200 - $350,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Clinical Technology Division is responsible for the maintenance management of all diagnostic, therapeutic, and equipment processing technologies used in the delivery of patient care to all UCSF Health patients. The Division's primary obligation is to ensure this technology is wisely purchased; appropriately configured; performs properly, consistently, safely, is routinely maintained; and is suitably and safely integrated with UCSF's IT and EMR systems currently deployed. To meet this wide-ranging obligation, the Clinical Technology Division is organized into six functional areas. Each functional area, while discharging its assigned responsibility, works collaboratively within the Division to provide the systemic response to the Division's primary obligations:

  • Clinical Technologies Administration (CTA)
  • Biomedical Engineering Services (BES)
  • Clinical Systems Engineering Services (CSE)
  • Medical Device Security Program (MDSP)
  • Business-Analytics-Compliance Services (BACS)
  • Program Management Office (PMO)

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • In-depth knowledge and applied background in biomedical equipment management, clinical engineering techniques, server / network monitoring, and security
  • Knowledge of Clinical Engineering industry trends
  • Proven ability to apply theoretical concepts to define work flows to meet department standards and organization goals
  • Knowledge of relevant biomedical equipment safety regulations and performance standards
  • Advanced user of clinical engineering technology and systems
  • Knowledge of other devices, systems, and integrations in the industry and ability to notice technological inefficiencies and analyze pros and cons of adopting alternatives
  • Proven ability to set goals and manage the implementation process for initiatives
  • Strategic abilities to collaborate with senior management on setting objectives
  • Demonstrated skills to organize, simplify and increase efficiency of clinical workflows, consolidate equipment management processes and integrate systems while maintaining standards and compliance
  • Highly adaptive and ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Skills in employee development to grow assigned manager and supervisor leadership skills, leading and guiding them to achieve objectives and manage conflicts
  • In-depth knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes
  • Strong problem solving skills to evaluate complex or new issues and identify options for resolution when no precedent exists. Demonstrated analytical skills to probe, challenge, and to question the status quo
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, senior management, all levels of clinical staff, assigned staff and coordinate clinical engineering activities across functions
  • Verbal and written communication skills to address critical, sensitive situations with discretion. Strong abilities to actively listen, and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others
  • Ability to apply policy knowledge to proactively identify potential risk areas in clinical engineering systems
  • Ability work collaboratively and promote others, soliciting and incorporating their ideas when appropriate

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in related area preferred
  • Certification in Clinical Engineering specialty preferred
