Purpose

Responsible for the installation, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical protection relays, controls, meters, and switchgear for Low and Medium Voltage electrical and chill water generation, distribution, and substation equipment. Responsible for the testing, troubleshooting and repair of VFD's, soft starters, excitation systems, and process control and SCADA systems.

Job Description
  • Installation, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical protection relays, controls, meters, and switchgear for Low and Medium Voltage electrical generation, distribution, and substation equipment. Proficient with test sets standard with industry. Documents and maintains equipment testing, troubleshooting and repair records. Mentor, coach, and guide others in the shop in these tasks.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of VFD's, soft starters, and excitation, process control, and SCADA systems. Monitors and records all electrical system operating data and recommends corrective procedures. Works on and troubleshoots low and medium voltage variable frequency drives. Documents and maintains equipment troubleshooting and repair records.
  • Procures, receives, and maintains inventory of materials, supplies, and tools. Completes work orders using automated maintenance program systems. Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate action.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas. Works in conjunction with other trades personnel to support relevant systems within a power plant and chilling station setting. Use of tools of the trade, and standard office equipment. May perform elevated work, including utilizing scaffolding and personnel lifts. May work in confined spaces.
  • Identifies, reports, and corrects safety hazards as necessary. Oversees and verifies compliance with standards of workmanship and safety. May be required to perform safety audits and inspections. May be required to train other personnel in safety and job-related categories. Work around hazardous materials and energy sources.
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and update equipment and system drawings. Must be proficient in use of a personal computer (Word, Excel, etc.). Review and update manuals, check sheets, procedures, and preventive maintenance instructions with best practice information. Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents.
  • Abide by Utilities and Energy Management's set of core values: Safety, Respect, Integrity, Reliability, Teamwork, and Excellence. Work effectively from a remote office or on campus. Drive university vehicle or cart. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Perform other related functions as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. Attends staff meetings. Attends safety training or meetings. Attends plant operation and maintenance training courses. Carries provided cell phone and participates in rotating on-call program.
Required Qualifications
  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Ten years of related journey-level experience in an industrial or utility environment with primary experience in metering, relaying, process controls and low and medium voltage switchgear, VFD's and soft-starters.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
  • More than ten years of related journey-level experience in an industrial or utility environment with primary experience in metering, relaying, process controls and low and medium voltage switchgear, VFD's and soft-starters.
Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$85,000

Work Shift
  • 9-80 Work Schedule; Monday-Thursday 06:00 AM - 03:30 PM and Every other Friday 06:00 AM - 02:30 PM.
