Introduction

Are you passionate about working with stakeholders to develop land use policies and zoning ordinances that will positively impact the community? Do you enjoy managing projects and solving complex land use issues in a fast-paced, collaborative environment? Loudoun County, Virginia's Department of Planning and Zoning is seeking five qualified professionals for the position of Senior Planner in a newly created Special Projects Division. After a training period, this position is eligible for two days of telework per week.


Job Summary

The ideal candidate shares a passion for public outreach and developing local land use policies, prioritizes problem solving and collaboration, and thrives in a fast-paced, result-oriented environment. As a member of the Special Projects team, the successful candidate will oversee the project management of Comprehensive Plan Amendments (CPAMs), small area plans, Zoning Ordinance Amendments (ZOAMs), and other initiatives directed by the Board of Supervisors, from inception to implementation.

This position has high visibility and works closely with the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Zoning Ordinance Committee, staff from other County agencies, and a variety of stakeholders, including residents, business owners, and community groups. Potential projects range from affordable housing and rural economy uses to transit-oriented development around Metrorail stations, redevelopment, data centers, and energy storage.

The successful candidate must have excellent writing, presentation, and facilitation skills; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; and the ability to communicate effectively with staff, the public, and elected and appointed officials.

This position is eligible for a $6,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, or a related field; five (5) years of related work experience OR Master's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related field; three (3) years of related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

Attendance at night meetings after normal business hours is expected.

This position requires a valid driver's license, criminal, credit, DMV background checks. Teleworking is an option after a training period. Relocation assistance is available to successful candidates who live more than 40 miles away.
