Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Special Services Generalist position. The Special Services Generalist is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $21.78 per hour - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Special Services Generalist supports the efforts of Special Services and Custodial Services to set up special events, move offices and provide general trucking both on-campus and off-campus. This position is the secondary contact person responsible for obtaining detailed information regarding special events and office moves from a diverse set of customers. The person in this position is also responsible for inputting the information into the facility's work order system as well as tracking the materials and hours.

Work schedule: The position is designated as providing essential services and may be required to report to work or remain on duty even when the College is closed. In the event of inclement weather or an emergency, support occurs in either providing materials (snow blowers, wet vacuums) or in participating.

Our work is central to student life, and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year. As such, a flexible schedule with extended shift times may be required. This person must be able to work weekends or extended hours to support special events or last-minute requests. The work schedule may vary and corresponds to the College's operational needs, but generally is Monday through Friday, 7 am-3:30 pm.

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Primary responder for Special Event set-ups and office moves
  • Effectively interacts with a diverse set of customers to obtain more detailed information
  • Receives and manages work orders utilizing technology (tablet) to communicate with customers through the facility work order system
  • Perform safe operation of college vehicles; in most cases, drive a truck that exceeds the gross weight of 10,000 pounds
  • General trucking duties include but are not limited to, transporting furniture, appliances, custodial supplies, books and mailings
  • Daily inspect the vehicle and maintain the vehicle safety logbook
  • Report repairs immediately to the Supervisor and Service Center to enable the work to be scheduled (for repairs involving safety-related items, the driver is to not operate the vehicle)
  • Perform general custodial duties necessary during office moves and when short-staffed
  • Maintaining storage spaces and monitoring equipment, which includes Amherst College vehicles, to ensure they are kept in good working order
  • Maintaining an accurate inventory of chairs, tables, hand trucks, dollies and specialized tools
  • Effectively collaborate with a diverse set of colleagues, ensuring a respectful, inclusive climate


Qualifications:

Required
  • Valid Driver's License and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
  • Valid Dot Medical Card or the ability to obtain within 3 months
  • General knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair
  • Basic knowledge of operating hand tools necessary for assembling and moving items
  • Basic familiarity with computer usage, including email and internet
  • Strong customer service, organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to plan, organize and multi-task when priorities change frequently
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Commitment to contributing to an intentionally inclusive and respectful climate
  • An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test


Preferred
  • High School or Vocational Diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year of related vehicle operation and equipment use
