The Los Angeles Times is looking for a senior journalist to lead our coverage of the Trump administration and the broader range of Washington news. The successful candidate will have considerable experience as a journalist in Washington, ideally as a reporter having covered the White House. This is a management position. Its primary duties include working with a team of Washington-based reporters, making assignments and serving as their seasoned guide and inspirational leader; reporting and writing, with an eye toward front-page-worthy enterprise, accountability and major news developments; and coordinating with other desks across the newsroom on coverage of the new administration and how its policies affect California. We're looking for an editor who brings sophisticated ideas and the ability to frame stories with a California digital audience in mind. As a member of the D.C. bureau team, the editor must be a generous colleague and be willing to pitch in on all D.C.-related coverage across all desks when needed. Responsibilities:
- Participate in planning and assigning daily coverage and enterprise stories
- Collaborate with editorial staff, including photo, design and copy desks, to produce stories on all platforms.
- Communicate editorial coverage plans in a clear and timely manner
- Provide guidance to staff on conceptualizing, reporting and writing content to ensure quality, accuracy and fairness
- Adhere to the company's editorial ethics policies and guidelines and other company policies regarding employee conduct, including where applicable the collective bargaining agreement
- Undertake the responsibilities of the role using the tools, software or technologies required at the time
- Help writers and editors develop their talents and elevate their work
- Help recruit and hire new staffers
- Work with department leaders to set strategy for the team
- Manage direct reports, including approving timecards and absence requests, and other tasks
- Work with IT and others to ensure that the D.C. office is properly equipped
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- A minimum of 10 years of journalism experience; previous management experience is a plus
- Strong writing and editing skills
- A portfolio that exhibits a history of strong story conceptualization and execution
- Ability to elevate copy for a sophisticated readership
- Ability to edit with attention to accuracy, grammar and style
- Demonstrated knowledge of journalism ethics and legal standards
- Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills
- General enthusiasm and collegiality along with strong leadership skills
- Prior experience with publishing tools, including content management systems
- Ability to multitask and complete work under sometimes intense deadline pressure
- An understanding of audience data and analytics and a track record of using data to make informed decisions on coverage
This management role will be based in The Times' Washington, D.C., office. This editor may be asked to appear on TV and radio on behalf of the L.A. Times and represent the organization at conferences, seminars, professional meetings and employer-sponsored events. Occasional night and weekend work is expected. The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $140,000 to $160,000 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs.
