Position description

The Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis is expanding its surgical services and seeks a veterinarian with advanced training in small animal orthopedic surgery to join the existing small animal orthopedic surgery team. Areas of expertise or interest that would fit well with current case load and expansion trajectory include fracture management including minimally invasive fracture repair, arthroscopy, total joint replacement, angular limb deformity management, and medical 3D printing; however, all areas of orthopedic surgery expertise and interest are welcomed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical: The position includes a 70% clinical effort to the Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Clinical effort to the Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) will include night on call and weekend, resident back up for orthopedic cases only, and is calculated into the 70% Clinical effort. The number of clinical weeks currently is 30 to 32 weeks. The Small Animal Orthopedic Service at UC Davis runs two receiving schedules: a Teaching Service (with residents and DVM students) and a Faculty Service (without resident or student). Clinical time for the position is equally distributed between the Teaching and Faculty services. Most orthopedic surgeries are performed in the Advanced Veterinary Surgical Center that opened in April 2024. Key responsibilities for the position include [1] directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; [2] providing health care and service to in-house and referral patients; and [3] advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Teaching: Primary teaching responsibilities include direct daily supervision and instruction of students and residents in the Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery service. Other responsibilities include: [1] participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; [2] clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); and [3] participation in the graduate clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH.

Professional Competence: The individual will be expected to advance the discipline of Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery within the VMTH, as well as locally through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care. It is expected that the individual will foster the VMTH reputation for clinical excellence locally and regionally. The successful candidate should maintain clinical competence and strive for recognition of accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.

Creative Scholarship: Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in the series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education. Faculty are expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation from peer-reviewed publications.

Service: University and public service is expected and may be achieved through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate means.
