Job Summary

The Police Lieutenant reports through the Police Chain of Command. Provides management for one or more department units or divisions. The police department is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Guides subordinates to achieve goals by established policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel.

This position provides planning, organizing, directing, monitoring, and controlling of a variety of law enforcement functions, programs/projects, and related activities. Individuals in this position may serve as a manager of an assigned division or major function within the Police Department, and perform related duties, as assigned. Under the command of the Police Captain, the Police Lieutenant provides command-level management to one of three Divisions: Field Services, Professional Standards Support Services, and Communication. Each Division has ancillary programs, projects, and units managed by the Lieutenant.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $129,600-$303,800, and the starting salary is $111,700+ depending on experience. . Department Description

The UCSF Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at the University and contract locations. Founded in 1864 and part of the 10-campus University of California, UCSF has more than 20 locations throughout San Francisco and beyond that including the 60-acre Mission Bay and 107-acre Parnassus campus. It is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre-doctoral and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital; UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute to name a few. UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. The UCSF Police Department is known for its community service orientation, effectiveness at preventing crime through campus community involvement, and for providing a safe living and working environment for the promotion of education, research and public service.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree coupled with five years of relevant exp.
  • Experience as a non-probationary Police Sergeant or higher classification
  • Broad experience performing all aspects of police officer and sergeant of police functions.
  • Strong knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions.
  • Strong knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment.
  • Strong knowledge of current law enforcement management theory and administrative standards.
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting and financial practices applicable to law enforcement in the University environment.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing.
  • Strong ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgment.
  • Strong ability to effectively orchestrate the ongoing deployment of multiple employees and resources.
  • Strong ability to supervise and train staff in the relevant and necessary aspects of their duties.
  • Strong ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology.
  • Broad knowledge of use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment or tools.
  • Strong ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity.
  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and possess a valid California Drivers License.
  • Able to pass medical and psychological examinations, and an extensive background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) standards.
  • Basic and Supervisor Certificate from POST.
  • Note: The work location is in San Francisco, although one may work in any given office or location within the Bay Area.

Valid California driver's license

Certifications required:
Possession of a POST Supervisory certificate and successful completion of the probationary period as a sergeant
Ability to successfully earn the POST Management certificate by completing a POST-certified 104-hour Management course within one year of appointment and serving as a Lieutenant for a period of two years
Note: Proof of Eligibility from POST prior to full employment SB2 and or SB960 as noted with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Gov. Code 1029/1031 compliant
